If you thought Henry Cavill (The Witcher, Superman, Highlander) was going to settle for just one trip to the grim darkness of the far future, think again.
On top of the flagship live-action series, Hollywood’s favorite mega-nerd is behind a new animated series. Variety reports that Prime Video is also officially developing a standalone animated “Warhammer 40,000″ series. And naturally, Cavill is executive producing this one too.
From Anthology to Full-Blown Series
The animated project is spinning directly out of Amazon’s late-2024 video game anthology Secret Level. The Warhammer 40,000 episode sent the fanbase into absolute hero-worship overdrive.
Dave Wilson is co-creating and directing the new project alongside co-creator John Orloff, with heavy-hitting backing from Amazon MGM Studios, Blur Studio, and Games Workshop.
“Secret Level wasn’t conceived simply as an anthology. It was designed as a launchpad for larger stories,” said co-creator and director Dave Wilson. “The response to the Warhammer episode was extraordinary… This series gives us the opportunity to build on that foundation and tell a much larger story.”
Suffer Not an Alien to Live
The details are being kept under tighter wraps than an Inquisitor’s secret files. However, we do know the central focus will be the Deathwatch.
For the uninitiated, the Deathwatch is the ultimate “special ops” chapter of Space Marines. The Deathwatch are an elite brotherhood drawn from various chapters. Their sole, brutal purpose in life is hunting down and exterminating alien threats or “Xenos.”
A Quick Primer on the Universe
First created by Games Workshop in 1987 as a tabletop miniature wargame, Warhammer 40,000 takes place in the 41st millennium, where humanity is trapped in a desperate fight for survival. Traitorous Space Marines, ancient alien empires, and terrifying warp-demons are constantly trying to tear human civilization apart piece by piece.
In a setting famous for its tagline, “In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war,” the Deathwatch are the ones who make sure humanity gives back as good as it gets.
