The 2016 supernatural miniseries “The Living and the Dead“ has officially joined the platform’s lineup. It offers horror enthusiasts six episodes of slow-burn gothic tension set deep in the eerie, fog-drenched Somerset countryside.
Created by Ashley Pharoah, the mind behind Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes, the series trades time-bending sci-fi for haunting rural superstition at the turn of the late 19th century.

The narrative follows Nathan Appleby,. He’s a pioneering Victorian psychologist, and his photographer wife Charlotte, who inherits a struggling family farm following the death of Nathan’s mother. Determined to modernize the estate and turn its fortunes around, the couple instead find themselves surrounded by unsettling phenomena. Which threatens both their livelihoods and their sanity.
Rather than relying purely on jump scares, the plot weaves real-world grief and mental health struggles with classic folk horror. As Nathan investigates local hauntings, ranging from a possessed teenage girl to a young boy plagued by terrifying visions, his own psychological stability unravels under the weight of his deceased son’s memory.

The players include “Merlin” star Colin Morgan as Nathan Appleby. Charlotte Spencer plays Charlotte Appleby. The cast also includes Nicholas Woodeson, Kerrie Hayes, Tallulah Haddon, and Malcolm Storry.

Despite critical praise, boasting an impressive 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, “The Living and the Dead“ flew largely under the radar during its original run. Critics praised its gorgeous, sun-dappled photography, strong lead performances, and ability to balance genuine emotional depth with skin-crawling atmosphere.
