When Home Becomes a Nightmare: The Disturbing Premise
Cameron Dawson Gray stars as Johanna, a child who moves in with her mother, Naomi (Ruth Wilson), into Naomi’s childhood home in suburban Philadelphia. Desperate to heal her father’s rapidly deteriorating health, Johanna turns to the occult. She tries to summon a benevolent spirit for protection. However, instead of bringing relief, the ritual triggers an escalating nightmare.
As Harry’s condition turns dire, Johanna’s dog vanishes without a trace, and terrifying hallucinations begin invading her everyday reality. She quickly realizes a sinister force has taken hold of her household. She becomes convinced that her own parents are hunting her down.
Personal Grief Transformed into Surreal Cinematic Horror
Family serves as the feature directorial debut for writer-director Benjamin Finkel, who drew deeply from his own childhood trauma to craft the narrative. Finkel lost his father to cancer at age fourteen. The experience profoundly altered his perception of reality during his formative years. Speaking after the film’s premiere, Finkel noted that he wanted to capture the true emotional turbulence of navigating a parent’s terminal illness. Rather than presenting a straightforward medical drama, Finkel used the horror genre to mirror the chaotic and illogical nature of grief. By taking childhood fears seriously, the film makes Johanna’s internal emotional collapse and the surrounding supernatural threats hauntingly indistinguishable.
Stellar Ensemble, Festival Success, and Streaming Availability
Alongside Gray, Wilson, and Chaplin, the film features a strong supporting turn from veteran actor Allan Corduner. Lynette Howell Taylor, Samantha Housman, and Finkel produce. Ruth Wilson and Jewerl Keats Ross serve as executive producers.
Family premiered in the Midnighters section at SXSW in March 2024, where it earned critical praise and won the prestigious Kickstarter NextGen Award. After its theatrical run with distributor Vertical, the film is now available to stream on Prime Video and Apple TV.
