Genre favorite and Evil Dead (203) star Jane Levy officially returns to horror alongside Happy Death Day star Jessica Rothe in River, which is director Joshua Giuliano’s feature debut.

Stranded Siblings Face a Relentless Wilderness Killer

The official trailer has just arrived, teasing a brutal fight for survival when it hits theaters this January. The story follows three estranged siblings as they reunite in their rural hometown after their father’s sudden death. To honor his memory, they travel down a remote waterway to scatter his ashes in nature. But disaster strikes when their boat breaks down miles from civilization, with no cell service. Suddenly, the siblings must set aside bitter family grudges to survive a ruthless, masked killer stalking them.

A Formidable Physical Presence and Clever Daylight Dread

Towering actor Dane DiLiegro portrays the film’s imposing, faceless killer, bringing brute physical terror to the woods. Co-starring Max Mattern, the story balances classic slasher elements with clever modern subversions. Notably, the director utilizes broad daylight and wide-open waters to create a surprisingly claustrophobic arena which amplifies every tense encounter as the relentless killer pursues the trapped family group.

Stellar Festival Praise and Thermal Sound Design

The film’s world premiere at TIFF’s Midnight Madness section generated immediate critical acclaim and loud audience cheers. Viewers specifically praised the impressive practical gore, fast pacing, and emotionally grounded performances from the core cast. Furthermore, critics highlighted Giuliano’s clever spatial framing and immersive sound design. By transforming a scenic river setting into an unavoidable trap, the production delivers an exceptionally lean survival nightmare.

Kick Off 2027 with River

River is one of the first genre films to hit theaters in the new year, arriving January 15, 2027. Buckle up for a wild, blood-drenched adventure.
