The Asylum is officially reviving the popular “Z Nation“ universe with an ambitious new sequel series, The Hollywood Reporter confirms. Titled “Z Nation: Resurrection,” the project brings the fan-favorite franchise back from the dead after years of hiatus. Syfy originally canceled the original show in 2018 following a successful five-season run. The apocalyptic franchise also expanded with Netflix’s dark prequel series “Black Summer,” which ran for two seasons.

A Darker Threat and Returning Fan Favorites

The upcoming sequel takes place several years after the original show’s chaotic finale. A terrifying new strain of the zombie virus emerges, threatening to eradicate the remaining human population. As a result, a new generation of desperate survivors must band together to navigate the evolving horror. Original stars Kellita Smith, Keith Allan, Russell Hodgkinson, and DJ Qualls are in talks to reprise their characters in supporting roles.

Expanding the Franchise Mythology for Modern Audiences

First-season plans confirm an initial ten-episode order designed to elevate the franchise’s signature action. Production leaders from The Asylum promise a narrative that expands established lore while increasing overall dramatic stakes. Karl Schaefer and Craig Engler created the series in 2014, and it built a massive global following. As a result, the upcoming revival aims to deliver the same unpredictable tone while venturing into darker territory.

“Z Nation has never really gone away,” said Asylum’s David Rimawi. “The fans have kept this world alive, and for years we’ve heard the same question: ‘When are you bringing it back?’ Z Nation: Resurrection gives us the opportunity to return to the characters and universe audiences love while taking the story somewhere bigger, darker, and even more unpredictable.”

If you missed “Z Nation,” part horror, part comedy, don’t fret. You can stream all of its seasons now on Shout TV, Shudder, Peacock, and Prime Video. Here’s a look back at the first season trailer for “Z Nation.”
