In a world where everyone is worried about AI taking their jobs, Neon is more concerned about AI taking your soul. The indie powerhouse behind Longlegs and Parasite has tapped VFX wizard Sam Evenson to turn his viral short film, Mora, into a full-blown feature nightmare.
If you’ve spent any time on the dark side of YouTube, you probably know Evenson from his channel Grimoire Horror, where he’s been traumatizing nearly 200,000 subscribers for years. Now, he’s moving from the small screen to the silver screen for his directorial debut.
A “Model” Student of Terror
The story follows a struggling, displaced artist who makes the classic mistake of mixing creativity with the Dark Web. After using an AI model trained on “corrupted” dark web imagery, the artist begins to be stalked by a mysterious, malevolent woman.
It’s a timely reminder: maybe stick to MS Paint if you want to sleep at night.
From Arrakis to Indie Horror
Evenson isn’t just a YouTuber; he’s got the technical muscle to back up the scares. His VFX credits include some of the decade’s biggest visual feasts. That includes Dune: Part Two (Academy Award winner), The Last of Us (HBO), and Thor: Love and Thunder.
A Murderer’s Row of Producers
Neon isn’t taking any chances with the production team, assembling a “Who’s Who” of modern horror heavyweights: Spooky Pictures, Roy Lee (It), and Steven Schneider (Late Night with the Devil). Cweature Features join them: Ken Kao and Josh Rosenbaum (Longlegs), as well as Iron Ocean Productions: Jessica Biel and Michelle Purple (The Sinner).
The Neon Horror Streak
This marks Neon’s third team-up with Spooky Pictures, following their success with 4×4 The Event and the Adam Scott-led Hokum (creeping into theaters May 1). With Longlegs smashing records as the highest-grossing indie film of 2024, Neon is doubling down on the genre, proving they have a better eye for “the next big thing” than an AI algorithm ever could.
Mora will be written and directed by Evenson, with Neon handling worldwide rights. Just remember: if you see a strange woman in your prompt results, it’s probably too late to hit “Ctrl+Z.”
