A Simple Treasure Hunt (In Theory)
Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s classic cosmic horror short novel, the game invites players to venture out completely alone or form a squad of up to four members. The mission? Embark on an expedition to an uncharted, hostile continent in search of a legendary hidden city containing invaluable ancient treasures.
Before diving into the foliage, you and your squad will gather aboard a sprawling galleon to pick your contracts and strategically divide weapons, ammo, and resources. You hike out, grab the loot, and bring it back to the captain. It sounds like an incredibly straightforward errand—right up until the ancient gods catch your scent.
Abominations and Accidental Sabotage
While the jungle is crawling with literal, multi-tentacled monstrosities, your greatest enemy is actually sitting right between your ears. As players venture deeper into the humid dark, their perception of reality gradually corrupts.
Once your mental health hits a critical stage, severe visual and auditory hallucinations kick in. You might see a monster that isn’t there, or miss the very real trap at your feet, leading to hilarious, tragic moments of accidental squad sabotage. To make matters worse, death offers absolutely no escape. If a companion falls in battle, they can easily return in a horribly corrupted, parasitic form to actively hunt down their surviving allies.
Horror Over Action: Pack Smart or Run Fast
If you are expecting to play a power fantasy where you gun down Eldritch gods with infinite ammunition, you are in the wrong jungle.
Your explorers are inexperienced, your ammunition is painstakingly limited, and your melee gear is entirely breakable. The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu aggressively prioritizes pure survival horror over standard action loops. If you try to Rambo your way through every creature that stands in your path, your chance of survival drops to zero.
The game rewards stealth, careful map navigation, and—when things inevitably hit the fan—a completely undignified, frantic retreat back to the ship.
