Just in time for the spookiest season of the year, AMC+ and Crave unveiled a dark first look at their upcoming mystery thriller series “YAGA” during San Diego Comic-Con—and it’s serving up a modern, wicked twist on one of folklore’s most terrifying legends.

Adapted from the hit stage play by showrunner and writer Kat Sandler, the eight-episode, half-hour drama reimagines the myth of Baba Yaga. Yaga is the infamous flesh-eating witch who resides in a hut propped up on giant chicken legs. The series reframes the lore as a slow-burn, contemporary noir set in a quiet coastal town.

A Disappearance, Secret Lives, and Ancient Magic

The story kicks off when private investigator Rapp (Noah Reid, Schitt’s Creek, The Vampire Lestat) rolls into town to solve the mysterious disappearance of Henry Park (Hudson Williams, Heated Rivalry), the young heir to a powerful local fishery.

Naturally, the case is anything but straightforward. Rapp instantly finds himself navigating a treacherous labyrinth of local secrets, pitted against Carson (Clark Backo, Venom: The Last Dance), an apprehensive local detective. As well as Katherine (Carrie-Anne Moss, The Matrix), a charismatic university professor with a dangerous appetite for younger men. There’s a town full of tight-lipped locals hiding dark pasts and practicing ancient, forgotten magic.

A Powerhouse Genre Cast & Crew

In addition to Reid, Backo, and Moss, the ensemble is packed with Canadian screen royalty and genre favorites, including Sheila McCarthy, Megan Follows, Katharine Isabelle, Patrick Gilmore, Ezra Franky, and Hiro Kanagawa. Emilija Baranac, Georgia Acken, Anisa Harris, and Sam Krochmal round out the cast.

Behind the camera, David Frazee (Chapelwaite) and horror veteran Rachel Talalay (Doctor Who, A Nightmare on Elm Street 5) split co-directing duties. Executive producers include Mackenzie Donaldson, Andrew Miller, and Carrie-Anne Moss, with Charles Cooper producing.

Drenched in fog, folklore, and atmospheric dread, “YAGA is shaping up to be an absolute must-watch for mystery and horror fans alike this fall when it premieres this October. Check out the new teaser below to get a taste of the magic waiting in the woods.
