Eighteen years after its divisive theatrical debut, The X-Files: I Want to Believe is getting the ultimate dark makeover. Series creator, writer, and director Chris Carter is finally releasing his long-lost, fully realized R-rated cut, titled The X-Files: I Want To Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn (with the subtitle translating from Russian to “Doctor Frankenstein”).
The restored director’s cut makes its official streaming debut on August 14, 2026, on Disney+ and Hulu—right alongside the original 2008 theatrical version.
Re-Animating the Monster: From PG-13 Compromise to Pure Horror
When the second X-Files feature film hit theaters in 2008, six years after the original series ended, it pulled David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson back into the fray to investigate a string of gruesome disappearances in the frozen wilderness. Guided by a disgraced, psychic ex-priest, Mulder and Scully tumbled into a disturbing plot involving organ harvesting and illicit medical experimentation.
“I made it too scary, and I was told so by the brass at Fox, and they wanted a PG-13 movie,” Carter recently revealed. “Now I have a chance to go back and make the scary movie that I always intended… We set out to make a real-life Frankenstein movie, and due to a variety of factors, our Frankenstein never completely left the operating room. A chance to apply the electrodes again was a special thrill.”
Rather than a simple cash-grab re-edit, it promises to restore the visceral, terrifying, horror-movie tone that was originally left on the cutting room floor.
A Major Moment for The X-Files Universe
The release of Carter’s director’s cut comes at a massive turning point for the legendary sci-fi franchise. While I Want to Believe had a rocky theatrical run back in ’08, the universe proved its staying power when Carter, Duchovny, and Anderson reunited for two hit revival seasons starting in 2016.
Now, Hulu is doubling down on paranormal investigations. Alongside Carter’s newly restored feature, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Ryan Coogler (Sinners, Black Panther) has officially wrapped production on a pilot episode for an all-new X-Files reboot series starring Danielle Deadwyler (Station Eleven, Till) and Himesh Patel (Station Eleven, Yesterday).
Gillian Anderson herself has given the new project her enthusiastic blessing, calling Coogler’s vision “different,” “special,” and urging legacy fans to give the new generation a chance.
