Hold onto your sailor hats, folks! Popeye the Slayer Man, a new edition to the Public Domain subgenre, is setting sail for theaters and VOD, bringing a tidal wave of ’80s horror nostalgia with it. Forget the wholesome spinach-fueled adventures you remember. This ain’t your grandma’s Popeye.
Ahead of its arrival in theaters, a new clip has surfaced to celebrate the film’s theatrical release, giving us a taste of the mayhem to come.
A Twisted Tale
Popeye the Slayer Man dares to reimagine the iconic sailor’s backstory. It plunges a group of unsuspecting friends into a nightmarish scenario. They sneak into an abandoned spinach canning factory, hoping to film a documentary about the legend of the “Sailor Man.” Local lore claims he haunts the factory and the surrounding docks. Little do they know, they’re about to become the stars of their own real-life horror show.
An Impressive Cast and Crew
The film boasts a diverse cast, including Sean Michael Conway, Elena Juliano, Mabel Thomas, Marie-Louise Boisnier, Jeff Thomas, and Steven McCormack. Scream queens Angela Relucio and Sarah Nickli add to the retro horror vibe. Jason Stephens plays the menacing Popeye.
Robert Michael Ryan, the director of Ouija Witch, helms this chilling tale. John Doolan, the writer of Remains, penned the screenplay. Jeff Miller, Cuyle Carvin, and Ryan contributed to the story’s development. Miller, Carvin, and Ryan produce the film, with Alexander Tucker, Nathan Todaro, and Alysa Blasetti serving as executive producers. Korey Rowe handles the cinematography, while R.J. Young supervises the unique makeup FX. The film, shot on location in New York State, is a collaborative effort between Salem House Films, Millman Productions, Ron Lee Productions, and Otsego Media.
The new clip showcases the film’s commitment to delivering authentic ’80s slasher vibes. Expect practical effects, plenty of gore, and a healthy dose of suspense.
