Break out the red balloons and hide your kids! HBO has officially blessed us with a second season of “IT: Welcome to Derry! After haunting our screens in late 2025, the hit prequel series created by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs is gearing up for another round of pure Stephen King carnage.

The first season dragged us through the deceptively peaceful 1962 suburbs. The upcoming chapter rewinds to 1935. Aiming to deliver a gritty, Depression-era nightmare that promises to make the first season look like a walk in the park. In fact, they dropped the first teaser trailer for the new season today. It sees the town rewind in time with Pennywise’s creepy laugh in the background.

Desperate Times and Very Bloody Measures

Season 2 is taking a direct page from one of the most brutal interludes in King’s original novel: the infamous Bradley Gang Massacre. The new narrative follows a desperate crew of bank robbers. However, they make the fatal, catastrophic mistake. They stop in Derry to buy ammo, only to face a brand of horror that Tommy guns can’t fix.

Director Andy Muschietti teased that 1935 Derry isn’t a cozy town. It’s a bleak, impoverished carcass filled with runaways, hustlers, and orphans just trying to eat. The season will dive deep into the era’s raw social anxieties and severe poverty. It will have a stark contrast to Season 1’s suburban aesthetic while keeping the burning flame of hope alive through a fresh cast of desperate heroes.

Andy Muschietti told Variety earlier this month that a writers’ room had opened for Season 2, even though a renewal had not yet been formally announced.

“There’s gonna be a lot of that depression-era hustling in the air in our characters. Everybody’s trying to get by and survive the circumstances. They are gonna do crazy things,” Muschietti said. “And of course, the social, cultural, horrible things that were happening in the era, too. We’re not going to skip those. [They are the] very center and the heart of our story.”

The Mastermind Behind the Prehistoric Dread

Brad Caleb Kane is stepping up as sole showrunner for Season 2 after co-running the initial installment with Fuchs. New casting details are still tightly guarded. However, horror fans are already salivating over the return of Bill Skarsgård’s unmatched, nightmare-inducing take on Pennywise.

Best of all, this is just the middle chapter of a grander vision. Muschietti is eyeing a three-season master plan that will eventually take us all the way back to the chilling 1908 disaster. Derry may be a terrible place to live, but it sure makes for incredible television. Watch the first season of “It: Welcome to Derry” now on HBO or Hulu.
