Some dreams evaporate the moment waking life begins. However, others wait centuries in the quiet corners of history to be remembered. Nakama Press, the manga and graphic novel imprint of Mad Cave Studios, has officially announced Yashirojima: The Forest of Lost Dreams—an evocative 216-page debut graphic novel from emerging mangaka Kaeru Utagawa.

Featuring lettering by Book Buddy Media, the story weaves together Japanese folklore, historical fiction, and intimate character drama. It explores how the past echoes across generations through the power of memory and reincarnation.

A Sleeping Boy and the Awakening of Ancient Spirits

At the center of the narrative is Yuta. The young boy lies fast asleep deep within the sanctuary of an ancient forest. As he slumbers, Yuta drifts through vivid visions of his past lives. He witnesses pivotal moments across centuries of Japanese history. However, his subconscious journey has supernatural consequences. Yuta’s dreaming mind creates a bridge to the spiritual world. It also awakens slumbering demons, ghosts, and territorial spirits that linger among the trees. This forces the physical and spiritual realms into an intricate, dangerous dance.

An International Debut Rooted in Classical Myth

Originally published in French by Vega-Dupuis, Yashirojima: The Forest of Lost Dreams marks Utagawa’s first long-form manga release as well as the artist’s official publication debut outside of Europe and Japan. Utagawa’s narrative style blends delicate, atmospheric linework with a keen visual sense, drawing heavily from classical mythology and contemporary fantasy. The result is a story that feels both timeless and deeply personal. It captures the haunting beauty of lingering folklore while quietly exploring human vulnerability.
