James Wan’s multi-billion-dollar horror universe is stepping back in time. New Line Cinema’s highly anticipated prequel, The Conjuring: First Communion, has officially found the actors to play younger versions of famed paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. Garrett Wareing (Manifest, Pretty Little Liars: Perfectionists) and Amanda Fix (Orphan Black: Echoes, High School) have been cast as the demonologist couple during the earliest days of their supernatural careers, exploring the chilling cases that forged their legacy in the paranormal world.

Release Date and Creative Team Behind the Prequel

The Conjuring: First Communion is scheduled for a wide theatrical release on September 10, 2027. Rodrigue Huart is making his feature directorial debut in the franchise, based on a screenplay by Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg (The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Fear the Walking Dead). New Line Cinema produces the film alongside James Wan’s Atomic Monster banner, ensuring the franchise’s signature atmospheric dread remains intact.

Plot Details: Tracing the Origins of the Demonologists

The Conjuring: First Communion reportedly focuses on Ed and Lorraine’s early partnership. The film will explore how the duo first met. It will also show how Lorraine’s clairvoyant gifts began manifesting alongside Ed’s work as a self-taught demonologist. It will also reveal the supernatural cases that led them to becoming the most famous ghost hunters in human history.

Expanding the Highest-Grossing Horror Franchise in History

The casting announcement marks the next major phase for The Conjuring universe, the highest-grossing horror franchise of all time. It has brought in over $2.7 billion in global box office receipts across its entries. The main timeline began with 2013’s The Conjuring (the Perron family haunting). It was then followed by 2016’s The Conjuring 2 (the Enfield Poltergeist). Then came 2021’s The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (the Arne Cheyenne Johnson trial). The last installment was The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025; the Smurl family case).

Alongside the central Warren saga, the universe expanded through successful spinoffs including the Annabelle trilogy (Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, Annabelle Comes Home) and The Nun series (The Nun, The Nun II). By taking the story back to the couple’s origin, The Conjuring: First Communion offers fans an intimate look at the human bond behind the terrifying case files. Watch it in theaters on September 10, 2027.
