Horror fans received an unexpected gift right as the clock struck midnight on Halloween. Streaming platform HBO Max quietly dropped an unannounced special episode titled A Story of Derry. The thirty-minute standalone release serves as a prequel to the hit original horror series “Welcome to Derry.” As a result, genre audiences can dive into new Stephen King mythology while celebrating the spooky holiday.
Venturing Into Ancient Supernatural Terror
The standalone narrative rewinds centuries before Pennywise the Dancing Clown ever terrorized local children. The plot follows three young Indigenous people who venture deep into the mysterious Western Wood. Deep in the forest, the trio encounters a terrifying ancient entity known as the Kollu. This dark spirit ties directly into the cosmic origins of the shape-shifting nightmare lurking beneath the town.
Expanding Cosmic Mythology
The standalone prequel significantly expands the lore of Stephen King’s famous nineteen eighty-six novel. The narrative also enriches the cinematic world filmmaker Andy Muschietti created. The story focuses on the creation of the magical dagger that binds the malevolent force to the region. Cosmic horror enthusiasts will also appreciate a brief appearance by Maturin, the legendary giant turtle avatar of order.
Indigenous Talent Behind the Camera
Director Tazbah Chavez helmed the special release following her acclaimed directorial work on “Reservation Dogs.” Screenwriters Cherie Dimaline and Jasmyne Flournoy penned the original script, bringing rich cultural perspectives to the story. The impressive cast features Kimberly Guerrero, Morningstar Angeline, Kiawentiio, Isabel Deroy-Olson, and Michael Podemski-Bedard. Veteran actor Zahn McClarnon also portrays the heroic warrior who forged the mystical binding blade. Notably, actor Bill Skarsgård does not appear, as this tale predates his character’s era completely.
Streaming Now Before Season Two
Subscribers can stream the thirty-minute Halloween special alongside all eight episodes of season one on HBO Max. Executive producers previously secured an official second-season renewal after massive global viewership. The second installment shifts the timeline to 1935, during the height of the Great Depression. Learn more about the upcoming second season of “IT: Welcome to Derry” at HorrorFuel.com.
