There’s a chilling new mystery thriller that you might have missed, American Sweatshop. And it is pulling audiences behind the digital curtain of content moderation and into a dangerous quest for justice. American Sweatshop, the 2025 film directed by Uta Briesewitz and written by Matthew Nemeth, is now available on digital platforms including Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and Plex.

Lili Reinhart stars as a social media content moderator. Her mundane yet grim task is to purge offensive and violent content from the internet constantly. She is tasked with witnessing the worst and most brutal humanity has to offer.

Her professional distance shatters when she witnesses a genuine, violent crime in a video. However, a need for accountability drives the moderator, and she is dangerously lured away from her desk. Soon, she crosses the line between passive observer and active investigator. She must now navigate the murky depths of the crime, putting her own safety at risk to seek justice for the victim.

Jeremy Ang Jones, Daniela Melchior, and Joel Fry co-star. The film is produced by Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana, adding significant weight to this modern mystery.

American Sweatshop premiered to positive buzz at the 2025 South by Southwest Film & TV Festival in March, where it featured in the Narrative Spotlight category. Now, audiences everywhere can stream this provocative look at the ethical and psychological toll of digital gatekeeping.
