Robert Rodriguez is trading the gritty streets of Sin City for the snowy rooftops of the North Pole. The filmmaker known for high-octane action and grindhouse gore is returning to his “first love” for an original, family-friendly animated feature at Paramount Animation.
Titled The Naughty List, the project marks the first major development under the label’s new leader, Jennifer Dodge. And promises to bring a “next-generation” edge to the holiday season, Variety reports.
A Decade in the Making
While the announcement might come as a shock to fans of From Dusk Till Dawn, the concept for The Naughty List isn’t a sudden pivot. Rodriguez has been developing the idea for over ten years, drawing inspiration from stories and sketches he created for his own children.
On social media, Rodriguez revealed his inner “cartoonist-at-heart,” sharing early concept art that featured a group of kids scaling a massive snowman.
“Way back in the day, I was a cartoonist before I became a filmmaker,” Rodriguez wrote. “I’m super pumped to be returning to drawing and animation for my first animated feature!”
The “Spy Kids” Pedigree
Don’t let the leather jackets and katanas fool you; Rodriguez is a seasoned pro at capturing the youth demographic. He famously launched the multi-billion-dollar Spy Kids franchise and the cult-favorite The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl.
With The Naughty List, Robert Rodriguez is expected to blend his signature “irreverent” wit with a heartwarming, modern Christmas tale. He is pulling triple duty on the project as the writer, director, and producer.
The New Era at Paramount Animation
The deal is a significant win for Jennifer Dodge, who joined the Paramount-Skydance regime in January 2026. Dodge previously spearheaded the global phenomenon PAW Patrol at Spin Master. Her move to bring a visionary like Rodriguez into the fold signals a bold new direction for the studio.
What to Expect
This isn’t your grandma’s Christmas special; expect a “funny and surprising” take on holiday lore. Drawing on Rodriguez’s background in illustration, the project is rooted in the filmmaker’s personal life as a father.
The Countdown to Christmas
While a specific release date and production timeline haven’t been gift-wrapped just yet. However, the buzz surrounding the project suggests it will be a cornerstone of Paramount’s upcoming slate.
Whether you’re a fan of his “Mexico Trilogy” or you grew up wanting to be a junior secret agent, The Naughty List is shaping up to be the most anticipated holiday heist of the season. Just keep an eye on your chimney— Robert Rodriguez’s version of Santa might be a little more “action-hero” than “jolly old Saint Nick.”
