Jonathan Demme Will No Longer Hear The Screaming Of The Lambs

It is with a heavy heart that I bring this bit of news to you today, my Little Monsters. Acadamy Award winning director Jonathan Demme has passed away at the age of 73 from esophageal cancer as well as complications related to heart disease.
Demme was the filmmaker who would prove that a smart and sophisticated horror film could win the film industry’s top honor, and in more categories than one. People can deny it all they want and try to make it more profound than it is. But at the end of the day you have to call Silence of the Lambs what it is, Jonathan Demme’s horror masterpiece.
Demme also directed another incredible film that highlighted a very different kind of horror – AIDS. With Philadelphia, Demme gave a very real and human face to this horrific disease while also displaying the prejudice and misconceptions of those who are on the outside looking in and judging those who are afflicted.
Granted these are but two of my personal favorites from a long catalog of work by Mr. Demme. He was a very capable and talented director who could take on pretty much any kind of subject matter, be it comedy, drama, thriller, documentary and of course, as Silence of the Lambs has proven, horror.
Demme is survived by his wife by his wife, Joanne Howard, and his three children, Ramona, Brooklyn and Josephine.
Thank you Mr. Demme for not only bringing Clarice Starling, Hannibal Lecter, and Buffalo Bill to the screen in such grisly and horrific fashion, but also for being a true artist who could make quality films across all genres. For my self and all my Little Monsters out there, we wish you peaceful rest now that the lambs are no longer screaming.
