A snowman is usually an innocuous sign of a significant winter snowfall and childhood merriment. However, when the name is attached to a serial killer whose murders tend to coincide with the first snow of the year, it obviously takes on a whole new sinister meaning.
The Snowman is a thriller adapted from the book of the same name, written by Jo Nesbø. The story follows Norwegian detective Harry Hole’s investigation into a missing woman, who has vanished leaving no trace except for her pink scarf which is draped around the neck of an ominous looking snowman. When he discovers similarities between this case and some cold case files, Harry determines that Norway has its first official serial killer. Now Harry and his team are on the hunt to discover the identity of the killer before this new case goes cold as well.
The Snowman is directed by Tomas Alfredson and stars Michael Fassbender as Harry Hole. The supporting cast also features Rebecca Ferguson, Chloë Sevigny, Charlotte Gainsbourg, J. K. Simmons and Val Kilmer.
This film is categorized as a crime thriller, but then again…so was Silence of the Lambs. I think we can all agree that Silence of the Lambs, for all intents and purposes, IS a horror film. As for The Snowman, it’s yet to be determined whether it will shake out the same way, or if it will lack the requisite levels of horror appeal for it to earn a place in the genre.
In any event my Little Monsters, Universal Pictures currently has The Snowman schedule for a release date of October 20th of 2017…just in time for Halloween.
