The classic illustrations by Stephen Gammell in the book  “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” terrified multiple generations. In a new 8-minute featurette from producer Guillermo del Toro and director André Øvredal‘s new movie, we watch as the illustrations are turned into disturbingly realistic creatures by Spectral Motion.

Troy “Twisty” James slipped on a suit to bring to life his character Jangly Man. Brilliant actor Javier Botet gives us the creeps as the toe-less woman in “The Big Toe.” Both created mostly by practical effects.

The featurette also reveals a look behind the scenes of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark which is now playing in theaters nationwide.

Set in 1968 in America, “a change is blowing in the wind…but seemingly far removed from the unrest in the cities, the small town of Mill Valley where for generations, the shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large. It is in their mansion on the edge of town that Sarah, a young girl with horrible secrets, turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories, written in a book that has transcended time—stories that have a way of becoming all too real for a group of teenagers who discover Sarah’s terrifying home.”

Written by Guillermo del ToroDan Hageman, and Kevin Hageman, the film stars Zoe Colletti, Michael Garza, Gabriel Rush, Austin Abrams, Dean Norris, Gil Bellows, Lorraine Toussaint, Austin Zajur, and Natalie Ganzhorn. Del Toro produces alongside Sean Daniel, Jason F. Brown, J. Miles Dale, and Elizabeth Grave.
