The Conjuring universe is quickly becoming one of the largest the horror franchises we’ve ever seen and there’s no sign of it slowing. The original James Wan-directed film gave way to one sequel already, plus the Annabelle trilogy, The Nun, The Curse of La Llorona, and now, The Conjuring 3.
In The Conjuring 3, Ed and Lorraine Warren will return for a new scare. Patrick Wilson, who stars as Ed, shed some light on the sequel recently during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
The process [of making Conjuring 3] was fantastic, and it’s a much different feel,” Wilson stated. “It’s still the same bones; it’s still very much Ed and Lorraine. Again, we are pushing our characters to places they haven’t gone, but the film will be a really nice addition because it’s definitely a different beast. Pun intended.”
The Conjuring 3 began production this past June in Atlanta with Michael Chaves (The Curse of La Llorona) in the director’s chair.
While the full synopsis hasn’t been released, our theory is that the movie is based on the true story of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, a man on trial that claimed demonic possession. His case was the first time demonic possession was used as a legal defense. The defense did not completely work however, on November 24, 1981, in Brookfield, Connecticut, Johnson was convicted of first-degree manslaughter for murdering his landlord. Before he was arrested, his family contacted the Warrens for help.
So why do we think this is the story? The plot being used by news outlets goes like this: “The Conjuring 3 will be about a man on trial for murder who claims he was possessed by a demon.” Sounds about right, yeah? There have also been rumors that a werewolf or two might make an appearance, which would make sense with Wilson’s “different beast” comment. But I guess we’ll just have to wait until more official details are released to know for sure.
The Conjuring 3 is set to be unleashed on September 11, 2020.
