Ella Rebecca has been in love with the horror genre since an early age. The Bride of Frankenstein began her love of the classics and she's been writing and collecting since.

There’s nothing we love more than settling down in front of a scary movie. We delight in the chill up our spine, the creeping sense of fear, the insidious dread that deepens by the second… There’s something deliciously exciting about frightening ourselves, especially when we get to do it from the safety of our own home.

But you can up the ante even more. If you’re forever in search of ways to magnify your terror and make that adrenaline rush more exciting, we need to introduce you to Horror Movie Bingo.

Horror Movie Bingo: the game

In 2021, bingo is bigger than it has ever been before. Sites like https://bingo.paddypower.com/ attract huge numbers of players, and thanks to their online existence, many of these belong to a much younger demographic than one would traditionally associate with the game. It turns out that young and old alike love playing bingo, and it’s little wonder why. Impossible as it is to predict the outcome, players are kept on the edge of their seats throughout, never knowing which number will be called next.

This same concept can be used in other areas of your life to make them more exciting too. Most people have heard of ‘word bingo’  as detailed by https://www.goldencarers.com/ – i.e. substituting the numbers on a bingo card for phrases – but did you know this idea can be applied to specific topics, events, and even genres?

It can and it has been, with one particular developer designing a game known as Horror Movie Bingo, which is available on the PC. Released in October 2020, the game costs a mere £4.50 to purchase but provides endless hours of fun.

It works by automatically generating a card for every person who’s playing. Each space on the card is filled with a particular horror movie trope, and when you notice this on-screen, you get to cross it off. The winner is the first person to fill a row of five. It’s simple but genius.

Creating your own take on the game

While the game is great fun and also relatively inexpensive to buy, it’s also possible to create your own version from scratch. If you don’t fancy paying out the princely sum of £4.50 or would simply prefer something more original, begin by creating your own bingo cards.

Once you’ve drawn these up, each player fills in their squares with various horror movie tropes or catchphrases (you can find some of our favorites here). These could be anything from haring off into the night on the tail of some spectral figure to casually asking what that clearly spooky noise was.

To make it even more fun, you can raise the stakes by creating a prize everyone wants to win. For this reason, the game works best when no one has seen the movie before, as otherwise one of your numbers might have an unfair edge.

This prize could be anything from a winner’s pot you each contribute to through to the losers having to perform some highly embarrassing communal forfeit – it’s up to you and your fellow players to decide what would make your victory feel most worthwhile.

The next time you put on a creepy movie, will you be playing?
