Today, I’m here to discuss director David S.Hogan’s supernatural thriller The Parish. Scripted by Todd Downing, The Parish stars Devil’s Rejects actor Bill Oberst Jr., Angela DiMarco, Sanae Loutsis, and Ray Tagavilla.

The film starts off with the heartbreaking story of a family grieving the loss of Jacob, a husband, and a father. With a plan of starting over, Liz and her daughter Audrey (Sanae Loutsis) move to a new town. It’s not long before the two begin to meet people that others can’t see.  The ghost of Jacob gives them stern and mysterious warnings.  Luckily, the local priest is there to help when things become darker and more dangerous, revealing the story of a dangerous mystery that has plagued the town for over sixty years.

The Parish is slow out of the gate but picks up some speed midway through. If you’re looking for something action-packed this may not be the film for you, but if you are willing to give it time there’s an interesting story. I will admit, I was a bit disappointed. The ending is a bit anti-climatic.

I had a big issue with The Parish’s audio. I found myself constantly adjusting the volume. You can barely hear the characters, but other parts are damn near deafening at the same volume. I’m not sure if it was meant to be used to add tension or cause jump scares, but it’s absolutely aggravating.

In the end, between the lackluster ending, the volume issues, and the complete lack of scares, I just wasn’t impressed with The Parish, but you may enjoy it. Watch it and let us know what you think. The Parish is out DVD and Digital on March 16, 2021, from Uncork’d Entertainment.
