Making its way around film festival circuits is an Argentinean film that’s making a big impact, Aterrados (Terrified). The movie overall, is a mix of a cop drama and horror. Aterrados (Terrified) is about a cop who’s heading towards retirement and he’s also known for having a big interest in paranormal investigating and because of his interest, he’s called in to investigate a series of strange deaths. The deaths are occurring in houses doors down from one another. The cop meets a well known paranormal investigator who’s handling a missing person case in the same area. The pair, along with other paranormal investigators, team up as they soon learn that the cases are all linked.

Terror Films has announced the release date and revealed the trailer for their Spanish language film, Forward. Written and directed by Henry Bedwell (Darker Than Night), the film stars Harold Torres and Axel Ricco, “…as two assassins hired to avenge their boss. The job leads them to what appears to be an abandoned hotel. However, they soon find themselves in an unexpected maze of madness, where realities intertwine and nightmares come to life. Faced with an evil demon named Larissa – played by Latin America television star Lisette Morelos – the duo realizes that the gates of hell prove to be closer to our plane of existence than either of them could have expected.” Forward has been the recipient of multiple film festival awards, including Best Feature Fiction at the 12 Month Film Festival, winner of Best Fantasy Film at the Feratum Film Festival and the Laurel of Achievement at Cinema Grand Prix and was an Official Selection at Sustefest,

Hey creeps, let’s focus our eerie eyeballs on a few new sinister shorts comin’ our way! Girls Night 2 Writer/Director David Teixeira returns with the sequel to his original short (this is all assumption…I have no idea if there actually is a Girls Night Part Uno, and I’m far too busy microwaving pizza rolls to check Google)! Anyway, the long and the short of Girls Night 2 is as follows: Jess (Marina de Sousa) hangs out with her pal Pierre (Vincent Conty) spending a night screening films and having terrible nightmares about being accosted by a sinister slasher from her past. Before long the paradigm is flipped and the maniac appears in the really real world bringing with it secrets and murder! Having not seen the first part of the story, Girls Night 2 is easy enough to follow with it’s standard stalk n’ slay scenario. Where the short shines is in it’s fever dream, giallo-esque qualities, where strange dreams

Two women on their way to a music festival hitch a ride with two dudes in a stolen car. Things get slightly rapey and the car goes a shootin’ down into a ravine, where our “heroes” become trapped in the overturned vehicle. Horribly wounded the gang tries to survive the night with little chance of rescue…but can they survive each other and the evil that greed can inspire? While the story line, as evidenced by my lil’ synopsis up there may be a bit lightweight (I actually would call it compact, streamlined, and uncomplicated), Accident more than makes up for it in visual panache. Director Dan Tondowski and Cinematographer Maxime Cointe have created a masterpiece (in the ‘looking good’ department that is) of long, unbroken shots and serpentine camera moves (both natural and digitally enhanced) that are rather astonishing at times, and they also manage to effectively dial it back once the protagonists become trapped within the confines of the

A diver named Matt (played by John Ashley and his sideburns) is brought aboard a ship and kidnapped by it’s crew, led by the Aryan Steinman (played by Jan Merlin and his horribly dyed hair), to a remote island where a Doctor (Charles Macaulay, who you cats would know as Dracula from William Crain’s classic Blacula) is performing bizarre experiments to turn beasts into men (now before you scream “This is a rip-off of The Island of Dr. Moreau!”, let me tell you that this film is blazingly original as the doctor here is named “Gordon”). Anyway, ol’ Dr. G tells Matty that he personally selected him to become a super-being, which leaves our hero unimpressed, so he decides to escape from this island hell. Lucky for him, the Doctor’s gorgeous daughter Neva (Pat Woodell) decides to help him along with the off-the-wall manimals locked in the doc’s dungeon basement…and with that back-up what could possibly go wrong? Ozge (Violetta Schurawlow) has it tough all over; she’s a Turkish cab driver livin’ in Vienna which makes her about as popular as a fart in a submarine with the locals, and most of her family isn’t too keen on her either. As you may guess, this makes Ozge a bit anxious, so she heads to the local gym to kick dude’s asses up under their hats (as well as the occasional policeman or customer). As fate would have it, there’s a real sick ticket roaming the streets, torturing sex workers of the Muslim faith to death, and our heroine gets a glimpse of this madman (and vice-versa) as he makes like the wind and blows the scene after killing Ozge’s prostitute neighbor. After dealing with unsympathetic cops, Big O’s nightmare comes true as the killer returns and the two battle in an out of control taxi (a real jaw-dropper of a sequence I must say). This leads to a

Veronica has got it rough all over; since her father died her mother has to work mega long hours leaving V-dawg in charge of her young siblings…when she isn’t attending classes at the local Catholic school that is. Speaking of that school, Veronica and two of her friends get the absolutely dip-shit idea to head down into the building’s basement during a solar eclipse to use a Ouija board to contact their dead loved ones. This goes about as well as one would expected and Veronica suffers some sort of physical episode. This leads to an outre presence making itself known at her home that threatens to destroy Veronica and her entire family. Will our young heroine be able to force those ghost back into whatever nether hell they emerged from, or will she lose herself to the darkness? Veronica is an interesting film for a number of reasons, and this may come a surprise given how familiar the story

Near central Italy is the town of Bomarzo, a picturesque location in the Italian countryside that would be a fitting backdrop for a romance movie about forbidden love during the Second World War. In the town, there’s a park called Sacro Bosco (Sacred Grove) but it’s become known as Parco dei Mostri (Park of Monsters). As ominous as the name sounds, it’s actually a beautiful park you can spend hours or days in exploring. The park earned its name due to the number of statues that depict creatures carved out of the bedrock amongst the forest. The layout of the park was designed by Pirro Ligorio and the sculptures carved by Simone Moschino in the 16th century. The park was said to have been neglected in the 19th century till artist Salvador Dalí made a short film about the park that sparked interest resulting in a restoration project to cut back the woods that had overgrown the part and opening

Teen mom Chloe returns home to Eden Rock in order to have the support of her mother in raising her infant son. Man it would suck if the place was a concentration camp a hundred or so years ago where babies were summarily executed. Anyway, that baby gets to constantly cryin’, Chloe falls into a depression, and begins seeing and hearing signs that her baby may be haunted. Despite the fact that her family and psychologist think she is just stressed the F out being a new mother and all, the evil omens grow ever more intense and dark secrets are revealed that push our heroine further over the edge. The Lullaby is a dreary, dark, and at times difficult fright flick to endure. Chloe (played to perfection by Reine Swart) is a stressed out, angsty hot mess, which definitely helps audience unease, and the underlying subject matter of violence towards infants is rather off-putting as well. This is probably going to be one of the shorter reviews I have ever written…mainly because I think if I spend any more time time thinking about Cruel Summer I may get sick. Cruel Summer tells the charming (and supposedly true) tale of a young autistic man named Danny (Richard Pawulski) from the inner-city that gets a chance to go to the country thanks to a Governmental program. While there he encounters a real psycho of a human being who plans Danny’s demise after his equally atrocious girlfriend concocts a lie about the youth. You can guess the rest. Let’s see if I can put a positive on some of this…I guess if you want to see a film that fully displays the cruelty and unfairness that life can throw at someone then Cruel Summer is the picture for you. There is no epic revenge, no hope, barely any retribution…it’s just one unfortunate soul encountering a force that is out
