A woman with brain cancer (Margarethe von Stern…who also co-wrote the feature) enters a surreal version of the Egyptian underworld (this time comprised of bucolic fields, swamps, and gaudy rooms and industrial settings). She soon becomes obsessed with the mummification of deceased animals (at times overseen by a frog…could this be a manifestation of the fertility goddess Heqet? Not a stretch when you hear what happens to our terminal heroine next…) before being mummified herself by the god Anubis (this time represented by a man, naked from the waste down and adorned with a fetishistic mask that roughly resembles a canine countenance). Before long our protagonist encounters multiple versions of herself (or so they seem) as she attempts to reconcile her mortality and sense of self. The Day of the Purple Sun is more of an “experience” than a traditional motion picture. The film is comprised of aesthetics more than a standard narrative, and the end result challenges the viewer

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD! (Non-Spoilers afterward) Tonight was the season finale of the first and possibly last season of AMC’s series, The Terror. The show followed the fictionalized account of the doomed Franklin Expedition based on the novel of the same name written by Dan Simmons, where the stranded English crew must face an unknown mythical beast in the arctic wasteland as well as each other. The series follows Captain Crozier (Jared Harris) who struggles with the freezing elements along with his inner demons (alcoholism). After the death of Captain Franklin (Ciarán Hinds), Crozier is now forced to lead the remaining men while at the same time coming to terms that the ships he and his fellow officers and what remains of the crew have to leave the shelter of their stuck ships and move across land. Danish Director Lars Von Trier made his returns to the Cannes film festival after a seven-year ban for a controversial remark made at his last appearance where he jokingly said he sympathized with Adolf Hitler. Trier showcased his latest film, The House That Jack Built. The movie stars Matt Dillon as a serial killer named Jack. After the showing, the film received a six-minute standing ovation from the audience that significantly shrunk in size since the film started. Over 100 audience members walked out during the picture’s showing and immediately expressed their disgust for the film. One of the biggest factors that sparked the walkout was a scene where it shows the title character Jack graphically shooting children. Another factor that caused walkouts was the graphic depiction of murderous torture. If Trier wanted to make an impression at the festival that previously banned him, it seems he accomplished his goal. The House That Jack Built will be out in 2018

Mad Foxes begins with Easy Rocker from Krokus blaring from the speakers…we may be off to something special here fiends… As far as what follows that sonic assault, it goes a lil’ something like this: Middle aged Hal is driving his (freshly turned) 18 year-old girlfriend out on a date in order to wine and dine her so she will let him be the one to ‘break the seal’ if you know what I mean (and if that bit of crass purple prose wasn’t clear enough for ya, the lady sits underneath a giant tacky painting of an oozing chocolate covered cherry), when he absolutely murders a Nazi biker, as one does. Of course that biker had equally as Nazi pals (at least indoors…their armbands have no swastikas in exterior shots, but they appear as if by magic inside) who arrive and beat the hell out of Hal and rape his girlfriend. The South Korean zombie film Train to Busan, which took moviegoers on a thrilling ride in 2016, may take fans love for the film to new terrifying heights as its being reported that the film will be adapted into a video game. Train to Busan, or as I call it, “World War Z done right.”, follows a fund manager and his daughter as they’re caught up in a zombie outbreak in Korea, their only refuge is the train they and others are riding on but soon the virus breaks out on the train. It’s being said that a division of the film’s distributor, Next Entertainment World, has signed Singaporean visual effects company Vividthree Productions to adapt the film into a video game. It’s unknown at this time what platform the game will be on and when or if the game will go into production. Time will tell but one thing is for certain, fans will be waiting at the station

A young woman finds terror during her stay in an isolated house in the countryside in the new trailer for The Antithesis, starring Crisula Stafida (Tulpa) and Marina Loi (zombi 3). “An isolated house in the countryside is beset by strange phenomena caused by bizarre temperature surges. Taking the advice of an architect, a young female geologist agrees to spend the night in the mysterious house in an attempt to identify the strange happenings. Once there, she finds herself trapped in a parallel reality…inside a vortex of horror and delirium. This stylish slice of Euro-horror was inspired by the Giallo films of Dario Argento and Mario Bava and features a pulse-pounding musical score by Claudio Simonetti of Goblin (Suspiria, Deep Red, Dawn of the Dead).” The film, directed by Francesco Mirabelli, won the “Mario Bava” award in the latest edition of the FantaFestival in Rome and will soon be released in the US from Bayview Entertainment.

Following writer-director Huh Jung’s directorial debut hit Hide and Seek, which is currently getting an American remake, comes Jung’s horror-thriller The Mimic. Inspired the South Korean mythological tale of the “Tiger of Mt. Jang,” where a legendary ghost that mimics humans, a woman takes in a lost girl she finds near the mysterious Mt. Jang and mystifying things begin to happen to her frightened family. The Mimic stars Yum Jung-Ah (Tell Me Something), Park Hyuk-Kwon (A Taxi Driver), Shin Rin-Ah (Ode To My Father), Heo Jin (The Wailing), Kil Hae-Yeon (Missing) and Lee Yool (Hello Murderer). Pity poor Goran (Franjo Dijak); all he wants to do is drink (a lot), drive his cab in the tiny isolated snow bound Croatian village he calls home, and hang out in a cabin with his BFF (Goran Bogdan) gettin’ his soak on…but unfortunately, his non-stop nag of a blind wife, Lina (Natasa Janjic) makes that increasingly difficult. Things carry on as usual until Lina announces she is pregnant, which goes over like a fart in a submarine for our hero, as he believes the child may not actually be his, but rather his sauna sittin’ pal mentioned previous. Well push comes to shove (literally) with disastrous results, and after a chemically enhanced Birthday party things get completely out of hand (read: incredibly violent and oh so very, very wrong)! Goran plays out like a relationship/family drama for nearly forty out of it’s eighty two minutes of run time (with credits), but then things go so incredibly south so incredibly
