One of the most memorable scenes from The Purge franchise stars Rhys Wakefield as that well-dressed young killer who gave the family in the first film an ultimatum as he grinned like the Chesire cat. That smile is hard to forget. Rhys has starred in many other roles than just in The Purge. He went diving in Sanctum, he went to school in After the Dark, co-starred in Echoes of War, appeared alongside Terrence Howard in Cardboard Boxer, and played the role of Lucas on the long-running series “Home and Away“. Now, he gearing up to make his directorial debut. Rhys sat down with me to talk about it and his role in The Purge as well as the soon to be released thriller The Grand Son (aka American Pets). The Grand Son follows Tod (Wakefield), a twisted young man, whose Hollywood lifestyle is put in jeopardy when he makes a fatal error. Horror Fuel: “Did you enjoy getting in

Not everyone was happy with Chris Hardwick’s return to AMC’s “Talking Dead“, a wrap-up show that comes on after “The Walking Dead“. Hardwick, also known as the “Nerdist” was suspended by AMC pending an investigation into allegations of sexual and emotional abuse brought on by Hardwick’s ex-girlfriend Chole Dykstra in June. AMC completed their investigation and allowed Hardwick to return to the show in which privately he apologized to staffers at a meeting. While some felt his emotional gesture was genuine, 25 staffers as well as an executive producer, left the show. during his suspension, current and former staffers described how difficult it was to work with Hardwick who they’ve said was prone to angry outbursts and loud altercations with others. Though AMC felt that Hardwick could return to host “Talking Dead” and stand by their decision, clearly 26 people felt differently in which AMC has declined to comment at this time.

Before there was An American Werewolf in London from master of horror John Landis, there was Schlock. Now, for the first time, Landis’ 1973 film is getting a limited theatrical release in over 150 theaters during the annual Art House Theater Day this September. Not only is it Landis’ first film, Schlock helped launch the career of one of the best SFX artists to ever walk the earth, Rick Baker. “Carnage! Terror! Banana skins! The mighty prehistoric ape Schlocktropus has emerged from hiding to embark on a full-scale rampage across a quiet SoCal suburb. The police are baffled. The army is powerless. The body count is rising…but when Schlock encounters a kindly blind woman who sees beyond his grotesque visage, the homicidal simian is presented with a chance at redemption…” Schlock opens in theaters on September 23, 2018. After a fifteen year run Girls and Corpses magazine has formed a new label, Girls and Corpses Presents which is kicking off with two horror comedies, Cynthia and Exorcism at 60,000 Feet. Cynthia was written, produced and fully financed by Robert “Corpsy” Rhine (Creator of Girls and Corpses Magazine). Girls and Corpses is following in the footsteps of National Lampoon going from newsstand magazine to production studio. The film was directed by the team of Kenny Gage and Devon Downs (Anarchy Parlor, Raze). This genre-bending film displays a young happily married couples’ conception, that grows into a slimy six-fingered one-legged nightmare terrorizing family values, the entire neighborhood and this little creepy crawly is just taking her first steps. Detectives embark on a monster-baby hunt of epic proportions as Cynthia munches her way home to mommy leaving bodies and bones behind. Cynthia stars Scout Taylor-Compton (“Halloween”), Sid Haig (“House of a Thousand Corpses”), Bill Moseley (“The Devils Rejects”), Robert LaSardo (“Anarchy

Summer is dying and Warner Brothers took a page from Universal Studios in 1983 and did a hit and run with a really bad shark movie. The Meg has more comparisons to “Jaws 3D” than it does with “Jaws” even though the filmmakers thought they were clever in their not so subtle “Jaws” references. “Jaws” All shark movies bow to the altar of “Jaws.” While Cynema is not about movie reviews, I propose that this film is important for one Cynematic reason: “The Meg” crosses us over into the big budget SyFy Channel movie and from the reaction of the audience I watched this film with, people just don’t get it. There is a Meg-sized difference between a bad movie and a “so bad it’s good” movie. It’s a wide area to cover but look at Joe Dante’s “Jaws” ripoff, “Piranha.” While indeed a clone, it was made with heart and creativity and fun. It was low budget zaniness…so much

This September the horror anthology Ghost Stories will haunt Blu-ray and DVD. This frightening flick hails from directors Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman and stars Martin Freeman ( Sherlock, Black Panther). Professor Goodman (Andy Nyman, Black Death) has devoted his life to exposing phony psychics and fraudulent supernatural claims. His skepticism is tested, however, when he receives a case file on three chilling and inexplicable incidents: a night watchman (Paul Whitehouse, Corpse Bride) haunted by disturbing visions as he patrols an abandoned asylum; an edgy young man (Alex Lawther, Freak Show) involved in a hellish car accident deep in the woods; and a wealthy former banker (Martin Freeman) visited by the spirit of his unborn child. Even more disturbing is that each of these macabre stories seems to have a sinister connection to Professor Goodman’s own life. Will they make a believer of him yet? Pick up your copy of Ghost Stories on Blu-ray or DVD on September 4, 2018,

Michigan based company It’s Alive Films has released their film Replicator for free on YouTube which you can watch below. The short satirical horror film clocks in at 34 minutes and 52 seconds, and originally debuted at Sunrise 45 Film Festival in 2017, later playing at Spooky Empire’s International Horror Film Festival. I wrote Replicator after reading about yet another remake being made of a beloved film, and finally snapping. I imagined the creators and studio execs being incredibly unoriginal, and thought of how useless they must be outside of a film studio. Then I thought about how scary it would actually be if one of these producers was put into the real world, with no actual skills other than remaking what already works just fine. The rest fell into place after that.” The film’s title, as well as its tagline ‘Anything can be remade’, serves to hint at the concept that the film tackles: a power hungry film producer
