Writer-director Caleb Johnson‘s directorial debut centers on Alice and Bret whose dog Harvie is dying, and he’s ruining everything. What had been a bright little family is quickly being consumed by clouds of self-doubt, suspicion, and a disturbing amount of ground beef. Bret (Lindsay Burdge) is taking the news hard. She’s had Harvie since before the relationship and is startled to find just how much of her sense of self is wrapped up in her history with him. Alice (Tallie Medel) thus finds herself on the outside of a relationship looking in. Gravitas Ventures, a Red Arrow Studios Company has acquired director Miles Doleac’s macabre riff on the Cernunnos myth, Demigod, and will release it in theaters and on streaming services this October. Directed and co-written by Doleac and Michael Donovan Horn, Demigod stars Rachel Nichols (Continuum, Star Trek) and was produced by Doleac, James Victor Bulian, Lindsay Anne Williams, and Wesley O’Mary, the same team behind 2020’s The Dinner Party. Upon arrival, a terrifying secret forces her to reckon with her family’s past and a mysterious ritual she thought was the stuff of fairy tales. I’m extremely grateful to Jeff Cooper and to Gravitas for their belief in this film’s potential. From its infancy, I knew this was a film that I wanted seen on the

Movie Review: Friend of the World

Writer/director Brian Patrick Butler’s Friend of the World is a surreal take on postapocalyptic horror and science fiction. It’s like an extended episode of the original The Twilight Zone television series if Rod Serling or Charles Beaumont or the like accidentally ingested a mind-altering substance, or if pages from the treatments of Dr. Strangelove, Night of the Living Dead, and Apocalypse Now all got dropped on the floor and then hurriedly gathered together and mixed up. Experimental filmmaker Diane (Alexandra Slade) wakes up in a room where she seems to be the only living person, as the floor is littered with dead bodies. After attempts to escape, she wakes up to see the shaving cream-lathered face of General Gore (Nick Young), a crusty, grizzled military member. Though the two are quite opposite in attitudes, they must work together to survive as they traverse through the bunker in which they are currently located. Butler’s mostly black-and-white film often feels like a
