My dude Finn (Sam Richardson) has just taken on the role of forest ranger in Beaverfield… a rural town crucial to the plans of Sam Parker (Wayne Duvall), an oil tycoon that wants to run his pipe straight through B-field’s sweet spot!
This has the populace at odds and on edge, and an encroaching storm and a growing number of dead bodies aren’t helping matters. Soon Finn and local mail-person Cecily (Milana Vayntrub) are balls deep in the murder biz as they try and suss out just who… or more precisely, what… is behind these savage attacks!
I’ll say one thing about Werewolves Within… it sure as shit has a literal ass-load of heart! Every character, even the real shit-heels are presented as pretty damn likable… or ridiculous… or an unholy combination of the two, and the actors present truly give it everything they have (special shout out to leads Richardson and Vayntrub who have undeniable chemistry and miles of nerdy charm!) to bring the wicked words and sinister situations concocted by screenwriter Mishna Wolff (aided and abetted by director Josh Ruben) to life… and what a story it is!
Think of a cross between The Hardy Boys by way of Stephen King with a shit-ton of spot-on humor and a dash of Amicus’ The Beast Must Die, and you have an idea of what you are in for with this one cats n’ creeps… charming. quirky young heroes out to solve a crime in a town so rural that it’s almost like it’s a separate planet unto itself is an award winning mix, and the absolute lunatics that inhabit these environs are a devious delight to behold!
While we are talkin’ story, apparently Werewolves Within is based on a video-game (by Ubisoft, who produced this here fright flick)… but I’ll be fucked if I’ve ever heard of it, so I have zero clue if this film actually has fuck-all to do with the game… so if you’re a fan of the game this may or may not tickle your putrid pickle!
While we are tempering expectations, don’t expect an all-out creature feature gore-fest, as this picture places most of it’s eerie eggs in the mystery/laughs basket, so if that’s not your beastly bag you have been well and truly warned!
To sum it up; Werewolves Within is a deft blend of off-beat (and at times pitch-black) humor and equally nutty whodunit, and it’s insanely enjoyable from beginning to end!
