Disney has turned quite a few of its rides into films, like Pirates of the Caribbean, we’ve gotten a Haunted Mansion movie, and the Jungle Cruise’s movie will be out later this year. Now, news has come that a film inspired by the Tower of Terror is on its way with Marvel star Scarlett Johanson, who plays the Black Widow.
Josh Cooley, who directed Toy Story 4 is writing the script, according to Collider, with Johanson producing under her These Pictures banner along with Jonathan Lia.
The Tower of Terror, also known as The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, was inspired by Rod Serling’s anthology series “The Twilight Zone”. The ride, set in a fictional Hollywood hotel, opened in 1994 in Walt Disney World and is featured at several Disney Parks. Guests enter the Hollywood Tower Hotel through a pathway that winds past overgrown gardens. Once guests enter the lobby covered in dust they are ushered into the library and then into the service elevator which stops at different floors. Once at the top the elevator drops, leaving riders rising off of their seats as the elevator falls 13 stories at 39 miles per hour. Since its opening, the ride has been upgraded to reveal new sights and sounds.
This isn’t the first time the ride has inspired a film, back in 1997 writer-director D.J. MacHale made a TV movie titled Tower of Terror starring Steve Gutenburg and Kristen Dunst. It centers on a disgraced reporter investigates an abandoned luxury hotel where five people mysteriously disappeared sixty years earlier.
