Barbarian is Riddled with Horror Clichés

It’s when it chooses to subvert or lean into those clichés that makes it a fresh, fantastic horror film. Barbarian is about two travelers who both get booked in the same Air B&B by mistake and discover the house has something darker and more terrifying hidden inside. It’s the first horror film directed and written by Zach Cregger(The Whitest Kids You Know(2007-11)) and stars Georgiana Campbell(Black Mirror (2017)), Bill Skarsgård(IT (2017)), and Justin Long(Tusk (2019)). 💀SPOILERS! Don’t say I didn’t warn you.💀 We start following Tess(Campbell) as she pulls up to the Air B&B house in the pouring rain, confused why her key isn’t in the lockbox. Enter Keith(Skarsgård), who’s already staying there and booked the same house on another website. If I didn’t already know this was a horror movie, I could have maybe passed this off as a super sketchy “meet-cute.” Woman Stays in Strange Place with Stranger Cliché Sure, Keith makes a point that it’s late, dark

'Birth/Rebirth' Puts A New Spin On The Frankenstein Story This August

Film Reviews: BIRTH/REBIRTH and RUN RABBIT RUN (Sundance Film Festival)

birth/rebirth A provocative take on the Frankenstein mythos, director Laura Moss’s birth/rebirth finds pathologist Rose (Marin Ireland) — who doesn’t have the time or desire to deal with your petty life problems — forming an uneasy alliance with midwife Celie (Judy Reyes) when the latter discovers that Rose is using Celie’s recently suddenly deceased daughter Lila (A.J. Lister) in an experiment designed to bring the dead back to life. Plenty of horror films have questioned how far parents will go to bring back a child who has passed away, but the questionable ethics displayed by the two main characters here go beyond the usual supernatural bargains and such, making them more monstrous than any reanimated corpse. Moss, who cowrote the screenplay with Brendan J. O’Brien, shows assured direction, and Ireland and Reyes have terrific chemistry together. Aficionados of Frankenstein mythology should put this one high on their need-to-see lists, as should fans of medical horror. Run Rabbit Run One bizarre

Spoiler Free Movie Review: ‘The Menu’ Is A Tasty Terror-Filled Treat

Director Mark Mylod has a tasty horror-filled treat for audiences, The Menu, which features an all-star cast including Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Fiennes, Hong Chau, Nicholas Hoult, and Judith Light. The film is set in the world of high-end culinary culture; a group of foodies visits an exclusive destination restaurant on a remote island where the acclaimed chef has prepared a lavish tasting menu, along with some shocking surprises. I went into watching this film not knowing precisely what to expect. I assumed it would be a pretentios film with a little horror thrown in. Well, you know what hey say about assuming. I will be the first to admit when I’m wrong and that’s the case with this film. What I got was an elegant film that combines psychological terror, brutality, and elevated horror that left me craving a good cheeseburger. Anya Taylor-Joy gives a fantastic performance, as does Ralph Fiennes, and the interactions between the two make for a

Shorts Reviews: TOOTH, MILLSTONE, and HUBBARDS (Slamdance Film Festival)

Tooth A woman (Janine Peck) takes impeccable care of her teeth, brushing, flossing, and whitening on a regular basis. Now her teeth are going to take care of her, in the much more violent sense of the term. Director Jillian Corsie’s horror comedy doesn’t spare the blood as it brings on the humor. Using puppets made from her actual teeth(!) along with CG effects, 2D animation, and live action, Corsie crafts a short that comments on the quest for perfection in a lighthearted vein. Sherri Chung’s whimsical score fits the proceedings wonderfully. You can watch the trailer at https://vimeo.com/778596583 Millstone This intriguing thriller finds a couple (Bellamie Bachleda and Daniel Durant) grieving over the loss of their five-year-old son, who was the victim of a hit-and-run accident, seeking out a highly unusual cure from a therapist (Eddie Buck). Shot exclusively in American Sign Language with an all-deaf cast, Millstone opens with an air of mystery and then takes a wholly
