Movie Review: Harbinger Down (2015)

Last night I popped a bag of popcorn and settled in to watch Alec Gillis’ new horror film ‘Harbinger Down’. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the special effects master did not disappoint. You should recognize Gillis’ name. He has done the special effects for many films including ‘Aliens’, ‘The Monster Squad’ (1987), ‘AVP’, ‘Ender’s Game’ and several films of the ‘Tremors’ franchise. ‘Gillis’ both wrote and directed ‘Harbinger Down’, which stars horror veteran Lance Henriksen (Aliens), Matt Winston (Star Trek: Enterprise), Camille Balsamo (Murder in the First), Giovonnie Samuels (Freedom Writers), Reid Collums (Whiplash), Winston James Francis (Little Boy), Milla Bjorn (Angel), Michael Estime (Beyond Merritt), Edwin H. Bravo (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End), Mick Ignis (Designed for Dreaming), Jason Speer (The Visitant) and Kraig W. Strutz. In ‘Harbinger Down’ two students and their professor board the ship ‘Harbinger’, a crabbing vessel, to study the effects of global warming on the migration pattern of whales. Sadie

SOMA Hits PC and PS4

If you ever played Amnesia: The Dark Decent and were a fan, you’ll be happy to know that Frictional Games’ latest horror endeavour, SOMA, is now available on Steam and the PS4 Network. Imagine if Bioshock and Amnesia had a baby, and then Alien: Isolation and Outlast had a baby, then those two babies grew up and met each other, fell madly in love, and had a baby of their own, that would be SOMA. And that’s not a bad thing. It takes the isolation elements of, well, Isolation, and merges them with the defenceless puzzle elements of Amnesia and Outlast, all taking place in an underwater base called PATHOS-II – much like Bioshock’s Rapture. You will have to outwit a range of enemies, such as corrupt robots, insane humans, and your own sense of reality as you try to bring power back to the facility and escape your potential demise. The dark, haunting depths of the ocean are a

Sandy Collora Turning To Kickstarter For His Film Shallow Water: Terror Of The Deep

Sandy Collora is making a horror movie, his way. The veteran special effects artist, who worked for Stan Winston Studios, beginning at the age of 17 as a sculptor. Collora has an impressive portfolio that includes movies like Total Recall and Men in Black, as well as being a writer and director. Collora made this statement on his Kickstarter page: “I hear people complaining about how the Hollywood machine is cranking out the same stuff OVER AND OVER, choosing economic safety over the creative art of filmmaking. I grew up on the original Alien and Predator films. I love them. But where are the NEW iconic creatures and characters? How long has it been since we’ve seen something truly unique and powerful in a genre film? Too long. If Hollywood won’t do it, I will. With your help, we can raise enough independently to crowd fund a great genre film. Maybe together we can even change the paradigm a little

Yamiken’s Short Film ‘Junk Head 1’ Is A Must See

Japanese filmmaker Takahide Hori aka Yamiken has spent the past four years making a stop-motion short film in his spare time. The 30 minute film was made with no outside funding or help. The film, titled ‘Junk Head 1’ is dark and absolutely incredible. If you’re wondering about the “1” in the title, Yamiken plans for it to be the first of a series. He hopes that ‘Junk Head 1’ will help him secure funding for the next film. ‘Junk Head 1’ follows an explorer in search of a sample of DNA belonging to a race of creatures created to do manual labor for a race of human like beings. The creatures live deep in the subterranean world. As the explorer descends things go very wrong. It blows my mind that one man created such a rich, well made, interesting film. ‘Junk Head 1’ has a distinctly unique feel. The film’s dark dingy hallways and nightmarish creatures make the film

Just As We Feared, Someone Is Rebooting ‘The Exorcist’

It’s been forty years since 1973’s horror film, ‘The Exorcist’, appeared in theaters, leaving people passed out in their seats, and began it’s reign as one of the most frightening and beloved films in history. Hollywood has been on a remake binge lately and it seems that ‘The Exorcist’ is to be one of it’s latest victims. Deadline reported today that Morgan Creek Productions has hired a firm to sell the domestic rights to over one hundred of their titles. Morgan Creek will be holding on to the rights to remake a handful of films, including the rights to ‘The Exorcist’. Morgan Creek CEO Jim Robinson told Deadline “I’m selling the library strictly for economic reasons,” He continued “It will go back into the company to fund more production. We have a number of properties that we are looking to move forward on.” When Deadline asked if ‘The Exorcist’ was one of those films Morgan Creek is looking to reboot
