Joseph Gordon-Levitt gave an update on the ‘Sandman’ movie, which he will be producing, directing and starring in, at Spike’s Guy Choice Awards this weekend.

“Big spectacular action movies are generally about crime fighters fighting crime and blowing shit up. This has nothing to do with that,” He continues “And it was actually one of the things that Neil Gaiman said to me, he said “Don’t have any punching.” Because he never does. If you read the comics, Morpheus doesn’t punch anybody. That’s not what he does. It’s going to be like a grand spectacular action film, but that relies on none of those same old ordinary cliches. So, that’s why it’s taking a lot of time to write, but it’s going to be really good.”

Levitt, Gaiman and David S. Goyer, along with Jack Thorne, who will be serving as screenwriter for ‘Sandman’, are working hard to create a movie that will honor Neil Gaiman’s original vision for the graphic novel. Warner Bros. is behind the project.

The ‘Sandman’ graphic novel series, published under DC’s Vertigo, follows it’s main character Dream aka Morpheus, who rules the dream world. Morpheus is one of the “Endless”. The “Endless” are a group of metaphysical entities, which includes Destiny, Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium(formerly Delight) and destruction. Gaiman’s graphic novel combines mythology with an air of horror.

The ‘Sandman’ series was made of seventy-five issues published from January of 1989 to March of 1996. Each cover of ‘Sandman’ was itself a work of art.
