Series Review: “Evil” Is A Sophisticated Supernatural Series That Needs To Be Seen

Demons, angels, and miracles are just some of the things that are considered very serious in the Catholic Church and have been forever. In the series “Evil” we watch as a team made up of a priest in training, a psychologist, and a contractor delve into reports of exorcisms and more for the church. Kristen (Katja Herbers), a clinical psychologist, struggles so hard to be a good mother and wife while trying to find fulfillment in her work. Though she’s a skeptic about the supernatural world after being recruited by David she can’t deny what is happening in the world around her. David Acosta (Mike Colter), who brought her aboard his team, is the opposite, he’s a true believer. The other member of their team is a general contractor and computer wiz Ben Shakir, played by Aasif Mandvi, who believes that there is a scientific reason for everything. He delivers a lot of comic relief in the series and does

Movie Review: The Mothman Legacy (2020)

Serving as a sequel to 2017’s Mothman doc; The Mothman of Point Pleasant (which I reviewed right here), The Mothman Legacy continues filmmaker Seth Breedlove’s deep-dive into the wicked winged world of this creepy cryptid! After a quick recap of Mothman-related events that culminated in the collapse of the Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant, West Virginia we delve back into the strange goings-on in that sleepy town and we learn that the lasting effects of the eerie encounters with that creepy creature still resonate throughout the town. Also present is evidence that the paranormal upheaval continues on, and has manifested in ways hitherto undocumented… even in regards to arguably the most famous figure in the entire affair, author John Keel, who’s 1975 novel, The Mothman Prophecies brought the events of Mothman’s reign of terror to the attention of the masses (and was turned into a film in 2002 starring Richard Gere). I’m not going to mince wicked words here; this

31 Days Of Anime Horror Part 20: ‘Red Garden’

It’s October and that means it’s time to get into the spirit of the season, and obviously nothing gets you into the Halloween mood better than horror. Unfortunately when it comes to most live-action horror films, there’s only so much that can be done and shown, but thankfully of all things, Anime can cross the line with story, gore, and intriguing storytelling. So for every day this month, I’ll be featuring a unique Anime that fits the horror genre that you can most likely find on any streaming service. The freaks come out at night in Red Garden. Red Garden (2006) takes place in New York City and follows 4 high school girls who are all from different cliques but all have amnesia from the same night. The girls soon learn that at night they will be summoned to fight monsters and will have to band together to face the truth about their new lives all the while trying to

Blu-ray Review: Mallrats (1995)

Geek’s geek Brodie Bruce (Jason Lee), a comic book loving video game enthusiast, is dumped by his girlfriend Rene (Shannen Doherty) and decides to spend the day at his happy place, the local mall. Along for the ride are his equally jilted normie pal TS Quint (Jeremy London), who’s girlfriend Brandi (Claire Forlani) has bailed on a planned vacation to appear as a last minute contestant on her father’s (the legendary Michael Rooker) game show which just so happens to be filming at said mall. Soon our heroes are on a mission to win back their respective ladies’ affection along with the help of high-as-fuck slackers Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (writer/director Kevin Smith), TS ex Gwen (Joey Lauren Adams), and even some sage advice from Stan Lee himself! As a follow up to the previous year’s Clerks, I always felt Mallrats was a big misstep, and time hasn’t changed my opinion… but there is definitely a lot to

Movie Review (Sitges Film Festival): The Old Ways

The Old Ways is, above all, a folk horror film set in Latin America that also includes elements of possession and body horror, as well as blending psychological horror and gore. It tries to tackle a lot, obviously, and sometimes that feels like it loses focus, but strong performances from its three female leads and solid direction make up for that. Christina Lopez (Brigitte Kali Canales) is a reporter of Mexican-American heritage who was born in Veracruz but left as a child sometime after seeing — though not fully understanding — her mother being exorcised. As an adult, she returns to the area on an assignment to research witchcraft, faith healers, and other local supernatural traditions. The film wastes no time in establishing its occult leanings as Christina sees something frightening in a forbidden cave, faints, and wakes up to find herself held captive by an elderly woman (Julia Vera) and her adult son (Sal Lopez), receiving pieces of information
