And it’s packing a surprising punch in its suitcase. Forget PG-13 shenanigans because this remake aims for an R-rating, raising eyebrows and anticipation in equal measure. A New Take: News of the remake first broke in 2020, with Treehouse Pictures promising a “diverse remake” centered on a family navigating the unexpected after their mom leaves town. Director Bille Woodruff (“Yellowjackets”) and writer Chuck Hayward (“WandaVision”) are reportedly joining forces to concoct a “new interpretation” that’s both witty and relevant to today’s world, at least that was the case, the last time we heard. The latest buzz surrounding the project isn’t about clever dialogue or social commentary. The official MPA rating is R. Yes, the film that once tickled our teenage funny bones with its PG-13 antics is stepping into more mature territory.

After encountering a number of locals that look at him like a dead man walking, lawyer Jonathan Harker (Fred Williams) continues to the Borgo Pass where he is met by a mysterious coachman that takes him to his destination; the castle of Count Dracula (Lee), an aging aristocrat who wishes to secure property in England with Harker’s assistance. Right from the get-go things are off with ol’ Drac, as he casts no reflection in mirrors, has fangs like a wolf, gets excited around blood, and sleeps in a stone coffin… oh, he also has a trio of brides that sleep in coffins and eat the babies of the

Mother Tongue (Australia, 2023) Jade (Amelia Foxton, who wrote the screenplay) and Alex (Chiara Gizzi) want to have a baby together, and Alex desperately wants to have it herself rather than adopting, but the couple has run out of almost all options. Almost all, because director Glen Fraser’s Mother Tongue being a horror comedy, the couple can always turn to the dark arts as a last resort. For their journey into the diabolical, they seek the assistance of Brian (Stephen Hunter), who seems to be on the flighty side but proves that he is indeed an occult practitioner. In another classic horror-comedy case of “Be careful what you wish for,” the trio finds itself in quite a gruesome mess.
