Spoiler-Free Reviews: TEARSUCKER and MIND BODY SPIRIT (Chattanooga Film Festival)

Spoiler-Free Reviews: TEARSUCKER and MIND BODY SPIRIT (Chattanooga Film Festival)

Tearsucker Seasoned fear-fare aficionados may be well versed in the set-up of director Stephen Vanderpool’s Tearsucker — a young woman falls for a seemingly charming stranger who turns out to be hiding a deadly side and goes on a trip with him despite her best friend’s uncertainties about the situation — but I can guarantee that the villain in this dark, macabre work has a disturbing perversion that you haven’t seen before. The film’s official logline, so that readers can rest assured I am spoiling nothing that isn’t already out for public consumption, is “Emotionally vulnerable women are preyed on by a charming psychopath who wants to suck their tears.” Tom (Sam Brittan) is the psycho in question, and he has his sights set on Lilly (Alison Walter), who has recently left an abusive relationship and is sharing her experience on social media, with tears aplenty flowing. Brittan’s screenplay is an intriguing, unsettling character study of both predator and prey.

Blumhouse Adapting New Hit Novel 'The Quiet Tenant'

Blumhouse Adapting New Hit Novel ‘The Quiet Tenant’

Blumhouse, known for its chilling films and series, will soon deliver either the adaptation of Clémence Michallon’s debut thriller, The Quiet Tenant, published earlier this month. There is no word yet if the adaptation will be a series or film. One of the most-anticipated novels of the year (IndieNext, GoodReads), The Quiet Tenant has just been published by Knopf in the U.S. and Abacus in the U.K. Hailed as “spell-binding” (Megan Abbott), “absolutely brilliant” (Brad Thor), “creepy, claustrophobic, and compelling” (Vogue), and a “tour de force of suspense and character” (The Big Thrill), the novel introduces author Clémence Michallon as an important new voice in the suspense genre. “I read Clémence’s novel in one sitting and was riveted. The story has all the elements of a great screen adaptation,” said Jason Blum, founder, and CEO of Blumhouse. “Jason Blum is one of the most dynamic producers working today,” said Michallon, “with an enviable slate of motion picture and television credits,

Hugh Grant In Talks To Star In A24's Horror 'Heretic' - From The Writers Of A Quiet Place

Hugh Grant In Talks To Star In A24’s Horror ‘Heretic’ – From The Writers Of A Quiet Place

Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the writers that brought you A Quiet Place, 65, and The Boogeyman, have made quite the name for themselves in the genre. They are now reuniting for the A24 horror Heretic, Deadline is reporting. The duo will also be directing. Two-time Emmy nominee Hugh Grant (D&D: Honor Among Thieves, Glass Onion) and Chloe East (The Fabelmans) are in talks to star. Plot details are still being kept under wraps but the rumor is that the film will center on two young women who are lured into a cat-and-mouse game in the home of an eccentric man. Webster’s defines “Heretic” as “a person believing in or practicing religious heresy, a belief or opinion contrary to orthodox religious (especially Christian) doctrine” So, it is likely that the film will feature heavy religious topics. We’ll keep you posted.

Box Set Review: Danza Macabre Volume One - Severin Films Blu-ray

Box Set Review: Danza Macabre Volume One – Severin Films Blu-ray

Our fiendish friends over at Severin Films have gathered up four Italian gothic horror films, slapped them in a (beautifully embellished) box, and unleashed them on our arcane asses under the title of the Danza Macabre collection. Let’s feast our putrid peepers on what this set has to offer one by fright-filled one! Disc One brings us 1964’s The Monster of the Opera: This flick opens with a banger of a scene in which a vampire chases a young woman in a nightgown before trapping her behind an invisible wall and trying to dispatch her with a pitchfork! Flash forward and dynamic theater director Sandro (Marco Mariani) has moved his troupe of actors, dancers, and mimes into an abandoned theater despite being warned explicitly not to do so by the caretaker of the joltin’ joint, Achille (Alberto Archetti) by name, who witnessed the ghoulish goings-on mentioned up yonder! As the arsty and fartsy goes on, it becomes ever more obvious
