Movie Review: Holiday Hell (2019)

As is the way around these putrid parts, my arcane ass has yet another horror anthology to review… so let’s hang the monstrous mistletoe and get balls deep into Holiday Hell shall we? Waiting until the last possible moment; a woman enters a curio shop on Christmas Eve looking for a gift. Well, said shop is run by Re-Animator‘s Jeffrey Combs, who gives fuck-all how late our heroine is and proceeds to weave a quartet of terror tales involving objects in the shop… on of which she must choose to purchase before the clock strikes midnight. Lady, just leave and grab a gift card somewhere; sure it’s unoriginal and lazy, but you get to not be menaced by supernatural shenanigans, and who doesn’t like iTunes or Target? Since she defies logic and stays, let’s start examining these yarns… First up we get Dollface; the story of a gang o’ teens poppin’ a squat in a murder house. this dread domicile

Creepy Comic ‘Keepsakes – A Horror Comic Collection’ is Crawlin’ Your Way!

Seattle based writer/musician Gregg Neville is bringin’ a creepy comic your way called Keepsakes! Now, just what in the unholy hell is Keepsakes about? Allow me to let ol’ Gregg to tell you all about it (using the Wonder of the Science Age: XIII’s CopyPastra Ray!!): “KEEPSAKES is a 24 page Black-and-White comic book, telling the story of two siblings who step into their late father’s basement and find his collection of mysterious and horrifying items. Each of those items comes with their own story- an SD card from a broken camera, a firefighter’s uniform, a box of baseball caps, a folder full of receipts from a restaurant. As they encounter each item, we learn their story, and we get a sense of… what else could possibly be hidden down in their dad’s basement.” Look, I’m not in the biz of blowin’ smoke up your collective asses, but I’ve had the opportunity to lay my eerie eyeballs on Keepsakes, and

Movie Review: Tales of Frankenstein (2018)

One of the more popular genres in our beloved horror biz these days is the arcane anthology, and while most of these are tied together by a basic, generic theme, it’s rare to see one with a laser sharp focus on one sinister subject. Well, to rectify that comes writer/director Donald F. Glut’s Tales of Frankenstein which focuses exclusively on Dracula… I’m just fuckin’ with ya, of course everyone’s fearsome fav pile of rando parts and stitches is the hot topic… in one form or another… Story Numero One-o, My Creation, My Beloved is set in the late 1800’s and focuses on a physically deformed relative of ol’ Victor F. who sets out to create the perfect man and woman. He kinda/sorta succeeds as the man is an Adonis type and the woman is gorgeous… well, except for the bolts in their foreheads, the angry stitch-work, and the dead flesh covering their beastly bones. This is a fun lil’ yarn,

Movie Review: Hellarious (2019)

Here it comes boils n’ ghouls; the latest arcane anthology to come a stormin’ into our beloved horror biz; Hellarious! Let’s see what this fright flick has to offer us horror hounds, shall we? Well I can tell you one thing it doesn’t offer, and that’s a wrap-around segment… Chapter One weaves the yarn of a small gaggle of grocery store employees closing up shop for the night. After leaving her charges in order to use the ter-let, the store manager returns to find some of her peers stark raving bonkers after enduring some unknown trauma or another… and trust me, when revealed the answer is as satisfyingly ludicrous as one could expect Comprised of a fun script (well acted) that takes the piss out of creature features, while presenting a unique twist on the genre as well, our first story sets the bar very high for the rest of the terror tales in this thing… Chapter Two brings us

Movie Review: Hi-Death (2018)

Here it comes boils n’ ghouls; another arcane anthology that will assault our putrid peepers with a multitude of fun-sized fright flicks! Let’s see how Hi-Death stacks up, and if it’ll contain more hits than misses… The obligatory wrap-around segment comes in the form of Terror Tour (written and directed by Brad Sykes) which features two comely lasses taking a horror based tour of L.A. while watching a series of tremble inducing tales along the way. In my opinion these are always the most superfluous of segments in these things, and this gets the job done okay. First up comes Anthony Catanese’s Death Has a Conscience; which tells the story of hardcore music fan and addict (of the fictional drug Spit) Erin (Jensen Jacobs) who decides to come down in a rank-ass motel room. Sounds prosaic enough, except the ol’ Grim Reaper makes the scene to have a heart to heart with our heroine! I enjoyed this one quite a

Movie Review: Nightmare Cinema (2018)

Five strangers end up in an abandoned theater where a strange projectionist (the one and only Mickey mother fuckin’ Rourke) shows them some fright flicks that contain each of their deepest fears. Thus begins Nightmare Cinema; the latest arcane anthology that weaves five terror tales balls deep in the ol’ horror biz! The first story is titled The Thing in the Woods (directed by Alejandro Brugués) and it begins with us thrown directly into the third act of a slasher picture already in progress. Our spunky final girl is on the run from the wicked Welder (and his implements of bodily harm) who has managed to kill nearly all her friends. Unfortunately for that masked maniac, our heroine is more than capable of putting up quite the fight…and then something turns this already pitch-perfect stalk n’ slay pastiche into a real thing of beastly beauty. Full of great grizzly gore, excellent shifting of paradigms, and an ability to bring some

DVD Review: Virus of the Dead (2018)

If there’s two things that cats what love the horror biz dig it’s arcane anthologies and zombies…so it stands to reason that many of you boils n’ ghouls would be curious to check out a flick that combines those things right? Well, you’re in luck because the flick I’m slapping my putrid peepers on today, Virus of the Dead, is an anthology that weaves together multiple (and I mean multiple) tiny terror tales together to present various views of a world balls deep in the middle of a zombie holocaust! Running through the film is a constant, that folks will simply not give up their vain phone usage and social media no matter how many frothing gut-munchers are at the door. It’s a good carry through, and sadly realistic…but whateves; it gives us a fly on the wall view of all that shamblin’ dead chaos that unspools for nearly 2 hours over fifteen sinister segments. Speaking of those segments they

DVD Review: American Nightmares (2018)

Two computer hackers run afoul of Mister Malevolent (the legend himself Danny Trejo) and his sidekick (Nichelle Nichols…I know, what the actual fuck, amirite?) who subject them to tales o’ terror in the mighty arcane anthology manner! Thus begins the new fright flick from Rusty Cundieff and Darin Scott (Tales From The Hood and Tales From The Hood 2). First up is Mates; the tale of a woman trying out a new online dating site after experiencing a bad romance (and raising a glass to her love of dick…and no, I’m not kidding). Well the date has an electrifying secret to say the least… This was a bit of a lackluster way to start the collection of tales, as this one isn’t great…or bad…it just…is. Next up comes The Prosecution, which involves an Attorney General setting his sights on becoming the Governor of Texas after a high profile conviction. As you can easily guess, that guilty party makes an escape

Blu-ray Review: Creepshow (1982)

Creepshow, or as I like to call it; “The best mother fuckin’ horror anthology ever made…period.” You’ve seen it, I’ve sure as shit have seen it…and I know you probably love it as much as your’s cruelly! Well, it just so happens our devilish compatriots at Scream Factory have just issued a special edition Blu-ray release of ol’ Creepy-baby, and I’m fixin’ to tell you what’s what about that…but first I’ll give a quick sinister synopsis for each story contained within this arcane anthology for all none of you that haven’t seen it… After a brief intro segment where a shit heel of a father (genre icon Tom “Thrill Me” Atkins) smacks his kid Billy (Joe Hill…the son of ol’ Stephen King; who just so happened to pen this fearsome feature, and a hell of a writer himself these days) around for reading horror comics we jump into our first tale: Father’s Day is the story of a wealthy and

‘Castle Rock’ To Tell A New “Unwritten King Story” Each Season

Just when we thought that Hulu’s anthology series “Castle Rock” couldn’t get any better we learn that the J.J. Abrams’ Stephen King universe-set show will “approach each season as an unwritten Stephen King novel”, according to co-creator Sam Shaw. Bloody Disgusting quoted Shaw as saying: “He’s a genre unto himself and there are seven or eight well-defined sub-genres. We’ve always loved the stories dealing with crime and punishment, and prisons, and Stephen King sort of grappling with real-world monsters – and what we do with them, and where we put them, how we treat them, and whether that makes us monsters. This season is written very much in the shadow of Shawshank and The Green Mile, and stories dealing with incarceration. But then there are great banging monster stories or there are cosmic stories about good and evil.” “We hope to have the latitude to come back to future seasons and just tell a great monster story set in like
