Daniel XIII; the result of an arcane ritual involving a King Diamond album, a box of Count Chocula, and a copy of Swank magazine, is a screenwriter, director, producer, actor, artist, and reviewer of fright flicks…Who hates ya baby?

Two computer hackers run afoul of Mister Malevolent (the legend himself Danny Trejo) and his sidekick (Nichelle Nichols…I know, what the actual fuck, amirite?) who subject them to tales o’ terror in the mighty arcane anthology manner! Thus begins the new fright flick from Rusty Cundieff and Darin Scott (Tales From The Hood and Tales From The Hood 2).
First up is Mates; the tale of a woman trying out a new online dating site after experiencing a bad romance (and raising a glass to her love of dick…and no, I’m not kidding). Well the date has an electrifying secret to say the least…
This was a bit of a lackluster way to start the collection of tales, as this one isn’t great…or bad…it just…is.
Next up comes The Prosecution, which involves an Attorney General setting his sights on becoming the Governor of Texas after a high profile conviction. As you can easily guess, that guilty party makes an escape and begins doing the stalk n’ slay bag to that aforementioned attorney.
As with the previous entry, this one is just kinda there as well…though there is some decent tension present during the cat and mouse scenes. Man, things aren’t looking so great here…
Following that we get White Flight; the story of a racist ass and his family who develops a way to travel to a dimension where minorities aren’t allowed.
Holy shit this was a long way to go for a punchline…and a fucking stupid one at that…
Next is The Samaritan; which involves a prostitute tending to the clown fetish of a dying man. Soon something goes amiss and a real life “evil clown” and ghosts appear which makes terror ensue…as it would.
This one was solid! I loved the creepy vibe, and atmospheric aesthetics…the twists were well done, and the overall story was just a cool lil’ terror tale!
Moving on, we have Hate Radio; the story of a misogynist radio host who undergoes a magical gender swap and becomes the target of a woman-hating serial killer.
Honestly, this one was rather cool as well…things are definitely coming up XIII her boils n’ ghouls!
Next up to bat is The Healer; a yarn dealing with a shady evangelist suffering for all the wrongs he delivered unto his flock at the hands of a mysterious abductor.
Hat-trick! This was a solid slice of EC Comis style supernatural revenge! Finally this thing is delivering!!
Finally comes Thy Will Be Done; which tells the story of a woman abducted by a family who wants to prevent her pending abortion. The big problem there…beyond the obvious…is that the baby is actually an unholy terror…literally!
I absolutely adored this batshit crazy segment, and for me it was the star of the whole show!
As for special features on this DVD from MVD Entertainment you get…a handful of trailers for other MVD titles. So, no dice there friend-o.
As with most anthologies, American Nightmares is an uneven affair…though the strength of the final four tales are enough to say that you should check this out if you dig on anthologies.
