Blu-ray Review: The Old Ways (2020)

Cristina (Brigitte Kali Canales), a journalist from L.A., has returned home down Mexico way to investigate some local ruins. There are a few snags on this workcation however, as the heroin addicted, childhood exorcism witness has been set up by her cousin who believes she is possessed. To that end she experiences the hospitality (read: her ass is chained to a bed in a dank cell and she’s forced to drink more goat milk than one would assume to be pleasurable) of an ancient bruja,,, a shaman witch if you will, named Luz (Julia Vera) and her son Javi (Sal Lopez) who go right ahead and work an exorcism on her ass right quick! Cristina naturally she assumes this is bullshit (her own past be damned!), but before you can say no bueno, that bruja begins pulling human teeth and snakes out of her belly… just reached right on in and pulled that shit out , they did… well, the

Director Christopher Alender Talks ‘The Old Ways’ And ‘Muppets Haunted Mansion’

Back in September, I reviewed the new supernatural horror The Old Ways, calling it “one of the best horror films of the year.” I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with its director, Christopher Alender to discuss not only the movie but also Muppets Haunted Mansion which his production company Soapbox Films produced that premieres on Disney+ this week. In The Old Ways, which premiered at Sitges, “Cristina, a journalist of Mexican origins, travels to the home of her ancestors in Veracruz to investigate a story involving witchcraft and healers. Once there, she is kidnapped by a group of locals who claim that she’s possessed by the devil and that she needs to be exorcised. When she tries to escape this nightmarish situation, the woman starts to believe that her captors may actually be right…” Horror Fuel: “You’ve had quite the impressive career, like Muppets Now. I love the Muppets, Gonzo and Pepe are my favorites. I once had

Movie Review: ‘The Old Ways’ Is One Of The Best Horror Films Of The Year

Director Christopher Alender and writer Marcos Gabriel (Muppets Now, Memorial Day) take us to a dark and ancient place in the supernatural horror film The Old Ways. The film centers on Cristina, a journalist who has returned to her native lands to write an article about disappearing cultures. After traveling to a forbidden place Cristina wakes up in chains in a strange old home in the jungle where an old man and a bruja (witch) refuse to set her free because a demon lies within her. The film takes the horrors of possession, fear, depression, inner turmoil, and demons and spins them into a tale that has the best of both the old world and the new. Yes, this is a horror movie, but it is also about so much more. It’s about a woman coming home to literally face her demons, it’s about learning understanding, and respect, it is about family, and finding your place in the world. There
