*Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this blog post. The opinions I share are my own. Harley (Finlay Wojtak-Hissong) is b.d. into the Banana Splits… a wacky kids program starring a quartet of costumed critters (Bingo, Fleegle, Snorky, and Drooper by name). As fate would have it, Harley’s mother Beth (Dani Kind) gets our diminutive hero tickets to the live show for his birthday, and drags along his slacker half-brother Austin (Romeo Carere), douche of a dad, Mitch (Steve Lund), and classmate (notice I didn’t say “friend”, ‘cuz Harley has next to none of those) Zoe (Maria Nash). Seems prosaic enough, save for the fact that the series has been cancelled, effective right after filming, and the automatons that portray the cartoonish cast have gone completely berserk and begin murdering people six ways to Sunday! Will Harley and his family survive the ordeal, or become part of the eternal horror

Remember The Banana Splits? They are no longer “family friendly”, in fact, they look downright demented in the first trailer for a new horror movie simply titled as The Banana Splits Movie. The movie, from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and Syfy makes it’s debut on Digital August 13th and on Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD August 27th, is R-rated for “horror violence and gore.” In the movie, “a boy named Harley and his family attend a taping of The Banana Splits TV show, which is supposed to be a fun-filled birthday for young Harley and business as usual for Rebecca, the producer of the series. But things take an unexpected turn – and the body count quickly rises. Can Harley, his mom, and their new pals safely escape?” Dani Kind (Wynonna Earp), Finlay Wojtak-Hissong (The Kindness of Strangers), Romeo Carere, Steve Lund (Schitt’s Creek), and Sara Canning (“The Vampire Diaries”) star. Danishka Esterhazy (Level 16) is in the director’s chair.

Vivien (Katie Douglas) and her pals at Vestalis Academy are meant to be clean, obedient, humble, and patient (or fucking else…a punishing experience our heroine experienced back on Level 10) as they progress toward their ultimate goal of adoption into a picture perfect home. That threat isn’t the only wonky thing going on at this sinister school as once the girls reach Level 16 it is revealed that while they are a brainy bunch, not a single one of them can read and they are administered sleeping pills disguised as vitamins nightly…in short things are definitely not what they seem at this putrid place and Vivien, along with her friend Sophia (Celina Martin) are going to get to the bottom of it as long as the fearsome Miss Brixil (Sara Canning) doesn’t stop them first! While a work of dystopian fiction, the themes of Level 16 ring loud and clear in our troubled times where women are often marginalized and
