Chloé Zhao Sinks Her Fangs Into Universal’s New Dracula Movie

Nomadland director Chloé Zhao is giving Universal’s classic blood-sucking monster Dracula new life, a new movie that will be a futuristic sci-fi western, Variety reports. Zhao will be writing, directing, and producing it. I’ve always been fascinated by vampires and the concept of the Other they embody,” Zhao said in a release. “I’m very excited to work with Donna [Langley], Peter [Cramer] and the team at Universal to reimagine such a beloved character.” Zhao states. Firstborn in Bram Stoker’s legendary 1897 novel, Dracula has been featured in many series and films and been played by many actors including Bela Lugosi in the ’30s, followed by Christopher Lee, Luke Evens, and Gary Oldman in Bram Stoker’s Dracula in 1992. Universal is releasing the collection on YouTube this month and you can watch them FOR FREE! Beginning Friday, January 15th, the movies will be heading to the Fear: The Home of Horror YouTube channel, with each film being available to watch for one week, NME reports. New ‘Van Helsing’ Movie On Its Way From ‘Overlord’ Director

Universal is continuing to add new versions of their classic Universal Monster franchise. Deadline is reporting that a new movie that centers on Van Helsing is now in the works. Horror heavy hitter James Wan (The Conjuring) will be producing the movie with Overlord‘s Julius Avery in the director’s chair. Eric Pearson wrote the original script, which Avery is rewriting. Van Helsing has long been the mortal enemy of Dracula and hunts down and slays monsters of all kinds. First mentioned in Bram Stoker’s Dracula in 1897, the character was played by Anthony Hopkins in 1992’s film adaptation by director Francis Ford Coppola. Hugh Jackman starred in the role in 2004’s Van Helsing written and directed by Stephen Sommers. Syfy’s series also featured a Van Helsing, this time it was Vanessa Van Helsing (Kelly Overton), the descendent of Abraham Van Helsing. There is no word yet about who will star in the new film. Universal Announces ‘Monster Mash’ Musical Feature Film

Grammy-nominated director Matt Stawski will be working in the lab late at night to give us an eerie sight, a musical feature, Monster Mash, for Universal Pictures. Stawski will be making his feature debut with the film, based on the classic song by Bobby Pickett. At the moment, there are few details about the musical. But we do know this, the song features the Wolfman, Dracula and his son, Igor, vampires, ghouls, and zombies, so we’ll probably see a lot of Universal classic monsters. John Fischer is spearheading for Temple Hill and will be exec producer with Stawski. Universal’s Senior Vice President of Production Jeyun Munford and Creative Executive Tony Ducret will oversee the project on behalf of the studio.
