GODZILLA: MONSTER PLANET Is A Kaiju Sized Misfire

Godzilla film’s have always been best enjoyed with a beer (or two…maybe just break out the whiskey), but “Monster Planet” is the first film in the long series that is best enjoyed with the television off. There’s no drug on Earth potent enough to help me enjoy this trash. Granted I’m coming at this film as a Godzilla fan, not an anime aficionado. I’m familiar enough with the big series, but I’d by know means describe myself as a fan of anime. The one thing “Monster Planet” has in common with 2014’s Godzilla reboot is it’s utter lack of the titular monster. Seriously, Godzilla’s in this thing for like, 15 minutes. It’s a cartoon, so budget restraints aren’t a problem. Or maybe they were, as 90 percent of the animation is poorly dubbed,

Suspension of Disbelief in Film Dysmorphia

Suspension of Disbelief? Sit through this annoying video up until the 5:00 mark. The fan boy “host” in the above video talks in attention deficit tweets. The video uses jump cut “hip” editing to spill out unabashed respect and love for the CGI technique that brought Peter Cushing back from the grave in “Rogue One.” He spends the first five minutes elaborating on the incredible work and effort it took create this digital feat. The “host” proclaims, “I think they pulled it off.” Then, being a true “fan” he takes a swipe at all of the work done by Industrial Light and Magic, effects artist, John Knoll and director Gareth Edwards. “Now Tarkin didn’t look a hundred percent authentic,” the “host” whines, “especially the movement of his mouth, but…he looked better than any other time this has been used.” What movies has this guy made? What has happened to film audiences? In the never ending quest for “realism” in special
