Last month, a short film contest for Annabelle: Creation (review), from director David F. Sandberg, was announced. Filmmakers were asked to create a short film, lasting 2 minutes or less, that would fit into The Conjuring universe. Filmmaker Julian Terry’s The Nurse has been named the winner for the US portion with his film The Nurse. The UK and Mexico winners are still out. As part of his prize, he will be going on an all-expense paid trip to Hollywood where he will meet with New Line Cinema and David F. Sandberg. In the terrifying short a young girl with her eyes bandaged feels as if she’s not alone. At some point, everyone has had that feeling, like they were not alone in the dark and that something terrible is lurking close by and terror sets in. That is was the girl is feeling. Terry was great at expressing that. There is no word if the short will be adapted

Kat Threlkeld, who won best director at Mostra Amazona Cinema Festival in Brazil this year for her short film, Seiren, is already getting a lot of attention. In fact, the mermaid-horror was also featured at this year’s Blood in the Snow Festival. It’s great to see another talented female director in the horror genre, we have so few in comparison with the number of male directors. I’ve been following Seiren for a while now. I was very excited to finally be able to see it last night and it did not disappoint. It began with a model on the beach, during a photo shoot. Soon she moves into the water for her next pose. Suddenly she screams, she’s bitten by something, what it was, she did not see. After returning home she falls ill and strange behavior over takes her. I won’t say any more about the plot, I would not want to spoil it for you. We see few

The short film ‘Foxed!’ has had such a successful run at festivals and has been so well received that David Cronnenberg has decided to adapt it into a feature film, with Martin Katz producing. James E.D. Stewart directed ‘Foxed!’ along side Nev Bezaire, who also penned the film. Athena Karkanis lends her voice to the main character Emily and the mother’s voice belongs to actress Fiona Highet. In ‘Foxed’ a little girl named Emily is kidnapped by foxes and forced to slave away in a mine beneath her home. When she finally has a chance to run she finds her way to a two-way mirror. On the other side she can see her mother at home talking the fox that has replaced her. The short stop-animation film is dark and is not designed with children in mind. It tackles a dark subject and does it well. Even though the film is short I was left thinking about it for days.
