Annihilation Review: Lovecraft Done Right

There’s a sense of unease all throughout Annihilation, the latest film from Ex Machina director Alex Garland. The strange color palette, booming techno-esque score, and oddly detached performances from the actors add up to a film that is immensely strange, beautiful, and utterly alienating. Few films have really nailed down what made Lovecraft’s monsters so powerful; not just that they were skyscraper sized, tentacled freaks, but that they were completely and utterly inhuman, unimaginable, beyond comprehension. Now since Annihilation is a film, and those generally have to be viewed with your eyes, the spectacle is made a little more sensible. But just a little. Almost every aspect of Garland’s masterpiece remains amazingly alien. The monsters and menaces of Annihilation are a result of a following star, smashing into the Florida Everglades, and infecting the land with an odd rainbow glow. Recalling Lovecraft’s seminal tale, The Colour Out Of Space, The Shimmer, as this forsaken land is coined, warps everything in it’s

Ten Horror Films Actually In Need Of A Remake

The list of really good to near-perfect horror flicks that have been given the remake treatment in the last two decades is staggering, and doesn’t appear to be slowing down any time soon. ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’, ‘The Fog’, ‘Halloween’, ‘Fright Night’, and so many others have been remade, reworked, or rebooted for a modern audience, nearly always resulting in a film inferior to the original. This abhorrent trend must stop, I say! Here are ten far-from-perfect movies that, unlike the aforementioned examples, could actually use a solid remake. ‘Ghoulies’ (1985) – One subgenre of horror sorely missing these days is the “small creature” movie. With the ‘Gremlins’, ‘Critters’, ‘Munchies’, and ‘Ghoulies’ series of films, creepy little creatures were everywhere in the 1980s and early 1990s. While ‘Gremlins’ is a masterpiece, and ‘Critters’ is really good, aside from cool creature design and an excellent poster that terrified many an eighties kid in the video store, ‘Ghoulies’ is pretty terrible,

Get Out Director Jordan Peele Is Heading To Lovecraft Country

It appears Get Out writer-director Jordan Peele is Heading to Lovecraft Country. Peele’s Monkey Paw Productions is teaming up with J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and Warner Bros. on a new one-hour series, titled Lovecraft Country, that will call HBO home. Underground creator Misha Green is currently penning the script for the pilot, based on the 2016 book by Matt Ruff. The series centers on 25-year-old Atticus Black. After his father goes missing, Black joins up with his friend Letitia and his Uncle George to embark on a road trip across 1950’s America to find him. This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the malevolent spirits that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback. Peele brought the book to Green’s attention. “When I first read Lovecraft Country, I knew it had the potential to be unlike anything else on television.” Green said. I’ll be honest, I thought Get Out was fantastic and

A Long Forgotten Lovecraft Manuscript Rediscovered

A recently rediscovered manuscript circa 1926, titled The Cancer of Superstition, co-written by Lovecraft was found in a collection of items from an old magic shop. The collection belonged to Beatrice Houdini and was commissioned by her husband, the legendary escape artist Harry Houdini. The 31-page work delves into and condemns superstition through out time. The Cancer of Superstition was not the first time that Lovecraft and Houdini worked together. Lovecraft often served as a ghostwriter for Houdini. The manuscript, co-written by CM Eddy, was meant to be a ‘campaign’ against superstition, but was sadly never finished. Houdini died soon after the project began and Houdini’s wife Beatrice made the choice not to pursue having it finished. The last line of the last written page is classic H.P. Lovecraft, “Most of us are heathens in the innermost recesses of our hearts.” H.P. Lovecraft & Harry Houdini Potter & Potter Auctions of Chicago will sell the manuscript at an auction containing

Review: She Walks in Shadows

She Walks In Shadows edited by Silvia Moreno-Garcia & Paula R. Stiles is very different from many of the books I’ve reviewed for Zombie Apocalypse Defense Force, before. It’s an anthology put out by an independent press which aspires to tell the stories of female authors whose works relate to or take place in the universe established by H.P. Lovecraft. Any horror fan worth their salt is familiar with Lovecraft’s work, so seeing the premise was enough to get me interested. The kind folks at Innsmouth Free Press were kind enough to send a copy of the book my way to review, and I am eager to share my thoughts with all of you. Book Description They emerge from the shadows, to claim the night …. Women from around the world delve into Lovecraftian depths, penning and illustrating a variety of Weird horrors. The pale and secretive Lavinia wanders through the woods, Asenath is a precocious teenager with an attitude,
