Blu-ray Review: Random Acts Of Violence (2021)

The Shudder Original Random Acts of Violence, from director Jay Baruchel, has just been unleashed on Blu-ray and DVD by RLJE. Jessie Willams stars as Todd, a comic book creator whose ‘Slasherman’ comics center on a serial killer, who is actually real in the movie, known as the “1-90 Killer.” As Todd continues his road trip with his girlfriend (Jordana Brewster), business partner (Jay Baruchel), and their assistant (Niamh Wilson), murders begin popping up that mimic scenes from his comic. This comic book movie about a comic based on real events that is actually based on a real comic book of the same name by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti. Random Acts of Violence combines the violence and gore horror fans love with an interesting story about trauma, relationships, and a unique way of looking at life. As for the cast, Jessie Williams played his complex character well, but that’s no surprise, The Cabin in the Woods and “Grey’s Anatomy”

Movie Review: Death Trip (2021)

Kelly (Kelly Kay) has two things on her mind; nightmares and a pending party at a secluded locale owned by her pal Garrett’s (Garrett Johnson). I’ll bet demons to diamonds those two ingredients will be mixed together right quick! Ridin’ shotgun for the affair are Tatyana (Tatyana Olal) and Melina (Melina Trimarchi), and soon the whole gaggle o’ girls are downing Molson (this flick was created in the Great White North, eh?), smokin’ weed, and bitching about who’ll have to sleep in the room that served as Garett’s grand-pappy’s deathbed. Speaking of “death”, our heroes also encounter Megan (Zoe Slobodzian), the underwear enthusiast next-door neighbor who’s father may have put the murder biz on her mommy dearest back in the day. With all that talk of goin’ tits up does it come as any surprise that the arcane abode they find themselves in appears to be haunted… but is it, is it really? With Death Trip, director James Watts and

Movie Review: Psycho Goreman (2020)

Everyone has been flappin’ their lascivious lips about what a great dive into the ol’ (decidedly comedic) horror biz Psycho Goreman is, so I had to set my eerie eyeballs upon it and give it the once over as only yours cruelly can… for better or for worse, your mileage may vary! After assing around in the backyard, siblings Mimi (Nita-Josee Hanna) and Luke (Owen Myre) unearth a strange jewel that is, in fact, a control module for an intergalactic murder machine (also buried in the backyard). That’s when the ultimate evil in the galaxy, newly christened Psycho Goreman (Matthew Ninaber with vocal duties provided by Steven Vlahos), falls under the control of a bossy weirdo girl from the ‘burbs. What follows is a wicked whirlwind of insanely over-the-top violent mayhem as ‘ol PG has to deal with both the children that are making his life a living hell, as well as every intergalactic shit-kicker that beams down to terra

Movie Review: Curse of the Blind Dead (2020)

Back in the darkest of Dark Ages, a gaggle of Knights Templar oversee a gnarly birth and attempt to perform one of those morally dicey post-partum abortions… but the local pitchfork toting mob but the kibosh on the lady, the baby, and finally the knights themselves via a good ol’ burning at the stake (after blinding them of course… that’ll be important later if the title of this fright flick didn’t clue ya in)! Flash forward to a rather rugged post-apocalyptic future, and the misadventures of Michael (Aaron Stielstra) and his preggo kid, Lily (Alice Zanini), whom after having their asses saved from some deep woods banditos, find themselves balls deep in the commune of a religious cult. Speaking of said cult; their leaders Kain (Micky Ray Martin) and Abel (Bill Hutchens) are hellbent in reenacting that monstrous monkey biz mentioned up yonder and they need Lily’s lil’ bun in the oven to bring those blind-as-a-bat terror Templars back to

Movie Review: Willy’s Wonderland Is A Fun Filled Bad@ss Flick

I’ve been eagerly waiting to get my hands on a copy of the animatronic horror Willy’s Wonderland from writer G.O. Parsons (interview) and director Kevin Lewis. Tonight, I finally did, and let me say, I was not disappointed. In the movie, Nicolas Cage stars as a quiet drifter tricked into a janitorial job at the now condemned Willy’s Wonderland, a twisted version of Chucky Cheese. The mundane tasks suddenly become an all-out fight for survival against wave after wave of demonic animatronics. Right off to bat, we meet Cage’s character after he flattens the tires of his badass car on a spike strip. Wild-eyed, pissed of, and silent, Cage makes an agreement to clean Willy’s Wonderland in exchange for getting his car fixed. But it doesn’t take long for the action to kick-off and for Cage to turn into a complete badass as he faces off against the animatronics one by one. You see, the reality is, “he’s not locked

Review: Wrong Turn (2021) Is A Bloody Good Movie

Every time I hear the words remake or reboot I cringe. In fact, I usually avoid them altogether, but after watching the new Wrong Turn movie that may be changing. It’s proof that they can be better than the original. The trailer piqued my interest so I decided what the hell, I’ll give it a shot, and boy am I glad I did. In the film, while hiking the Appalachian Trail, a group of friends begins stumbling into traps. Believing that someone is out to kill them, one of the group kills a hunter, setting off a disturbing chain of events. The Wrong Turn franchise is known for its brutal kills from both the inbred hillbilly family and their nasty traps. In Mike P. Nelson’s new version we get the traps that we’ve come to expect and the kills are still brutal, but it’s a very different movie than the original. While the 2003 original has its own unique charm,

Movie Review: ‘Sator’ (2021)

Jordan Graham’s new supernatural horror Sator is heading towards its release. I got a chance to watch it early and I thought I’d share my thoughts with you. In Sator, Graham’s family, including his grandmother, have claimed to have long had contact with a mysterious presence by the name of Sator. After the sudden loss of his mother, Adam has become a recluse and retreats deep into the forest to his family’s cabin. When he’s not hunting, he sits in the dark cabin along with his trusty dog and listens to the tapes of his grandmother talking to Sator while consumed by the trances she frequently falls into. Gabriel Nicholson stars as Adam, who is best described as the silent type, hell, he barely says anything at all. I’m sure his lack of lines was meant to make him come across as sort of stoic, but it only makes him feel distant and cold. The other main character is Adam’s

Blu-ray Review: A Slaughter in Plague Town (2008)

A bickering family of American tourists decide to stop off in a small Irish village located in a picturesque, verdant landscape. Seems prosaic enough, but as horror movies oft times go; this village has a deep, dark (in this case mutant) based secret that will put that vacay in a serious dovetail right quick! As you may surmise from that sinister synopsis, Plague Town (or A Slaughter in Plague Town) is a fright flick positively dripping with atmosphere. This is nowhere as evident in the locales utilized to bring this terror tale to life; all wicked woods and dark, almost monotone environs. It’s drab, it’s dreary, and it looks exactly like the place you’d run into some good ol’ folk horror madness! Adding to the positives are the lean n’ mean flow of the film delivered by co-writer (along with John Cregan)/director David Gregory keeps things disturbing and moving like a spectral locomotive from hell, so this one never becomes

Blu-ray Review: The Attic Expeditions (2001)

Our boy Trevor (Andras Jones) is coolin’ his heels in Ye Olde Insane Asylum after having supposedly murdered his girlfriend. While there he is plagued by nightmares about black magic (and murder ‘natch). Trevor’s doc, Dr. Ek (the legend himself, Jeffrey Combs) is hellbent on plundering all of Trevor’s subconscious secrets and utilize it for his own dark purposes… so things are looking grim as fuck for our hero indeed! What I feel is The Attic Expeditions‘ greatest stumbling block may be what you cats n’ creeps dig the most; namely the fact that the narrative is told from Trevor’s highly suspect perspective, so we never know if the images he sees are fact or just the result of his mental condition… and you cats n’ creeps know if there is something supernatural afoot I like it to be the real deal, no ifs, ands, or buts! Thankfully the film is jam packed with surreal images and some great co-stars

Movie Review: ‘Freaky’ Is One Hell Of A Fun Flick!

When a movie gets a huge advertising campaign or a ton of attention on social media, I often find myself let down after I actually get to watch it. But that’s not the case with writer-director Christopher Landon’s (Happy Death Day, the Paranormal Activity franchise) Freaky. In the movie, high schooler Millie Kessler (Kathryn Newton) is just trying to survive the cruel halls of Blissfield High and the evil of the popular crowd. But when she becomes the newest target of “The Butcher” (Vince Vaughn), the infamous serial killer who stalks her town, her lack of popularity becomes the least of her worries. Part horror, part comedy, Freaky gets so much right. Newton plays the perfect balance of kind and quirky and is truly relatable. You really feel for her, but when her soul gets swapped with the killers, you can clearly see the change even in subtle ways, like her wardrobe and the looks she gives. Vince Vaughn kills
