‘The God In The Hills’ Is Guaranteed To Horrify And Entertain (Short Story Review)

“The God in the Hills” by Jon Steffens is an absolute slap in the face…a kick to the groin…a punch right through your chest-into your heart, and I mean all of this in a good way! I got this short story the other day with no inkling what is was about. No warning, no heads up. So let me give you the favor I never got…this story will wreck you. It is 50 pages of uncensored, no holds barred, gruesome, shocking, and horrific terror that I couldn’t put down. I say that again, I could not stop reading! I was grabbed from word one all the way to the end. This was entertainment in the most graphic way. I was intrigued because of the gore and evilness of the story, but let;s not take away from Steffen’s abilities as a writer. He is very engaging and pains an amazing tale with his words. HE is Coming HE was coming and I knew HE would find me. I looked around the house frantically. Panicked, I rushed around looking, searching, back and forth looking for a place to hide. Time was running out. HE was coming and I knew HE would find me. I lived in the house, I had lived in it my whole life, but I did not know where to hide. I propelled myself silently and anxiously down the hallways, seeing and omitting every spot passed. HE was coming and I knew HE would find me. The cold sweat was starting as I went through each room. Tick Tock – An Original Story: Part 2

Part One here “Can I help again today Dad?” “Of course son, come on.” It was time to wind the watch. He looked forward to watching his father reverently remove the watch from its stand in the glass case on the bookshelf in the den of their house. Gently he took the watch down and laid it on a soft piece of material on the desk next to a lamp. He sat on a stool next to his father watching his father’s skilled hands polishing the watch’s casing. Then he slowly opened it, blew out imaginary dust from the hinge, and polished the crystal. Then, with his eyes glued to the project, he watched his dad carefully wind the watch three and a half times, listen to it tick and listen to it tock. TICK…the watch hand clicked each second away…TOCK…each second seemed slower than the prervious one…TICK…it had been two hours since they had left him…TOCK…it was the first time he had been alone for three months, maybe four…TICK…it was hard to remember…TOCK…the seconds were getting slower…TICK…maybe the watch needed to be wound…TOCK…where had he left it…TICK…he could never remember where he set it…TOCK…“it must be wound every day to keep working”…TICK…his father’s words echoed in his mind and he began to panic. I’m a big fan of short stories, generally speaking, and I was curious about the “late night exit” which would lead to a “hellish back road”. That could mean anything! I was especially curious about the odd diner on the cover of the ebook, so I picked it up with no small amount of eagerness. Book Description: In this highly-acclaimed horror novelette by Terry M. Inversion by Charles Scott is a short story by up and coming writer Charles Scott. The book description offered only a slight insight into what the book might be about, so naturally I was curious. Book Description: A dark ritual begins a journey with no end in sight… The debut short story of author Charles Scott. Overall Review: 4.5/5 My only dislike about this story was the fact that it was so short. Granted, I realize that when something is presented as a “short story” that one shouldn’t go in expecting a tome, but I’m unaccustomed to seeing short stories offered in their own right on Amazon that are less than 10 pages in length. With that being said, I thoroughly enjoyed “Inversion”. Scott’s tone was delightfully dark and sinister, there was plenty of violent language/disgusting imagery to satisfy my diabolical, gorehound side, and the words were generally well chosen.
