Blu-ray Review: Alone in the Dark (1982)

Dan Potter (The A-Team‘s Howlin’ Mad Murdock himself, Dwight Schultz in a milquetoast turn) has recently taken a job as a doctor in Dr. Leo Bain’s (Halloween‘s Donald Pleasence) unorthodox lunatic asylum called the Haven. Speaking of the ol’ Haven, those hallowed halls are also home to some real Grade-A psychos: deranged army vet Frank (Jack Palance), church burner Byron “Preacher” Sutcliff (Martin Landau), mountain-sized pedo Ronald (The Running Man‘s opera-singing one man E.L.O.; Dynamo, Erland van Lidth), and selfie-adverse serial killer nicknamed “the Bleeder” (Phillip Clark, who’s character dons a hockey mask to do his dirty dealings… just like Jason Voorhees did in Friday the 13th: Part 3-D, released just a few months earlier…but who was first is a topic of debate); a qwazy quartet that believe Potter murdered their former doctor (whom they all loved), but who in truth took another job. As fate would have it, a major power outage looms in Potter’s future, and the resulting

Blu-ray Review: The House on Sorority Row (1982)

Vicki (Eileen Davidson) and her sorority sisters are ready to have a little bit of that ol’ party-hardy magic that all graduating college students are so damn balls deep into, but one thing stands in their way to achieving all of that flip-cup nirvana… Mrs. Slater (Lois Kelso Hunt), a real bitch of a house mother if ever there was one… and also the victim of some sort of birthing mishap which I’m positive won’t factor into this narrative at all… Anyway, Vicki’s got a gun, and after a half-assed prank gone wrong, Ironbox Slater finds herself tits up in the sorority house’s swimming pool. Oh well, time to have a rager! Accidental death or not, someone must have witnessed that murder biz, because soon someone is offing our heroines one by one in various and sundry violent ways, and not even the soul-stirring tunes of 4 Out of 5 Doctors (think a Nick Gilder cover-band that decided writing their

Blu-ray Review: The Stylist (2020)

Hair stylin’ Claire (played to lunatic perfection by Najarra Townsend) is a bit… off. See, ol’ Claire has a penchant for removing the scalps of her clients and putting them on her own noggin to… live vicariously through them? Look, shes unglued, it doesn’t have to make sense… The Stylist, the debut feature from writer/director Jill Gervargizian is nothing if not, well.. stylish. Every frame of this picture is so well realized and put together that the images become works of art (and I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the impressive sets utilized here as well)… this is low-budget filmmaking that looks anything but, and was put together by a true artist. Thankfully this film has more going on besides lookin’ damn good (though Satan knows that’s usually enough for yours cruelly… )! A big boon to this production is the acting chops of Townsend who makes Claire a deft blend of pathos, madness, and sexual ambiguity, that results

Movie Review: ‘Why?’ Left Me Asking ‘Why?’

Why? that’s the new film from director Corbin Timbrook. I’ve got some thoughts, so bear with me as I try my best to express them properly in this review. Starring Natasha Henstridge (Species), Emma Bell (“The Walking Dead”), and genre staple Lance Henriksen (Aliens), Why? could best be described as a slasher. The story centers on a writer who takes off to a rental cabin, where she will stay until her boyfriend arrives a few days later not knowing she is being stalked by a killer. Where to start? You could say that some of the acting was decent (sometimes). But that’s about as far as the compliments are going to go in this review. Sorry. Here’s my problem with Why?, the entire time I was watching this movie I kept feeling like I have seen it before, then I realized, I had, sort of. If you took scenes and troupes from the main slashers, the classics, reshot them, and

The movie will also have elements of films like Mean Girls as well as Revenge of the Nerds. So it will have some humor mixed in as well to the film.” Director Shawn C. Phillips states. Will
