Blu-ray Review: Cosmoball (2020)

In the future, the galaxy’s greatest form of entertainment is Cosmoball; a form of space soccer involving athletes that can teleport from all ends of the universe and beyond! Enter: Anton, a scruffy teen from Earth who lives in a candy colored (more on that in a bit my cats n’ creeps) slum with his sick mother (who’s illness is the result of Earth’s moon being cracked into pieces after a collision with an alien spacecraft)… a mother who’s medicine the family can not afford… and his ass hates him some Cosmoball, let me tell ya! Well it sucks to be Anton, because it is soon revealed that he can teleport (thanks to some alien interference from a menacing alien scientist Cherno and his equally alien, but beautiful, daughter Valaya (Mariya Lisovaya)… yeah, there’s a lot going on here, all of it involving, and get this… aliens, and aliens that want ot use Anton’s DNA to conquer the universe), so

Blu-ray Review: Crazy Samurai 400 vs 1 (2020)

Legendary samurai swordsman Musashi (Tak Sakaguchi of Versus and Battlefield Baseball fame) is all hot and bothered to put the murder on the head of a rival clan… but it turns out the newly elected leader is all of nine years old. Musashi gives that the loudest “fuck it” of all time and kills the tyke with zero hesitation. This causes hundreds upon hundreds of samurai warriors to descend upon Musashi and begin a fight sequence that lasts seventy-seven minutes… and is presented in a single take. And that is the entirety of the plot. How well Crazy Samurai works for you will be your willingness to commit to that conceit, as it’s all sword fighting and nothin’ else for an incredibly long time, and while that may seem like a gimmick… and Satan knows it truly fuckin’ is… it’s damn impressive nevertheless. Gone is the hyper-kinetic, comic book style violence you may expect, and in it’s place we get

Blu-ray Review: Synchronic (2019)

Paramedic Steve (Anthony Mackie… ol’ fearless Falcon from the MCU) and his partner Dennis (Jamie Dornan) tear ass around a nocturnal New Orleans saving lives n’ shit… but soon that gig turns a bit ‘weird as all fuck’ when they begin responding to calls with ever-increasing outre elements… all of which seem to lead to the new designer drug, Synchronic. Soon Dennis finds himself in dire straits, and Steve attempts to lend a helpin’ fucking hand… which results in him taking Synchronic himself… a fact that leads to all manner of fresh hell since a tumor on his pineal gland makes him ultra-receptive to the drug’s unique effects… but also puts a deadline on his efforts to aid his partner’s plight… emphasis on the word dead, what with that tumor biz and all… Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (who also served as the film’s cinematographer) take what could be a mean streets procedural and turn it into a psychotronic mind

Blu-ray Review: Max Cloud (2020)

Video game wizard, and ultra-’90s teen Sarah (Isabelle Allen) is totally into the video game The Intergalactic Adventures of Max Cloud, so imagine her fuckin’ surprise when she is zapped into said game courtesy of one of it’s characters, The Space Witch (Jason Maza) where she takes up residence in the body of the ship’s chef, Jake (Elliot James Langridge). Now she must help Max (Scott Adkins) and Commander Rexy (Sally Collett) eliminate the threat of the outlandishly evil Revengor (John Hannah in a delightfully over-the-top role) and his henchwoman Shee (Lashana Lynch) and get back to Brooklyn circa 1990. Max Cloud is nothing if not imaginative, and co-writer (along with Collett)/director Martin Owen manages to squeeze every bit of production value out of the production with some fun and clever choices. The sets are colorful and fun (if limited), the actors all incredibly game (and actually funny… a true plus for a comedy, right cats n’ creeps?), the miniatures

Blu-ray Review: Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula (2020)

Remember ol’ Train to Busan, the story of a father trying hard as fuck to get his daughter to her mother via train during a zombie apocalypse? That one had suspense, human drama, and plenty of gut munchers, and seemed like a breath of fresh air among the fetid pile that is the over-saturated zombie film genre. That brings us to Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula, the follow up to that aforementioned fright flick, and while the zombies remain, little else from the first go-around remains. In a prologue set during the time of the first film, we get a touch of that ol’ magic from the first film as South Korean Marine Captain Jung-seok (Gang Dong-won) tries unsuccessfully to flee the zombie menace along with his sister and her family (only her husband and the Captain survive), on a boat that is soon overrun with the infected. Flash forward four years, and Chul-min (Kim Do-yoon), that previously mentioned husband

DVD Review: Evil Boy (2019)

Igor (Vladimir Vdovichenkov) and Polina (Elena Lyadova) have lost their son Vanya (Sevastian Bugaev), and three years later decide to adopt. Off they trot to a rural Gothic mansion of an orphanage and while there discover a dead groundskeeper and a feral child (Sevastian Bugaev, in a dual role) locked in the basement. Well, that lil’ hellion bonds with Polina, and soon they are the proud parents of a completely uncontrollable maniac… well Polina is thrilled anyway. Igor on the other hand is torn between trying to make his wife happy and trying to not get totally creeped out by the fact that the child soon starts looking and acting like Vanya… hell Polina even gives the new addition the name of their missing child. Well wouldn’t ya know it, junior begins displaying some rather off putting supernatural tendencies that send our heroes into a deep dive into the child’s past. I’m sure that’ll go well… Co-writer/director Olga Gorodetskaya (working

Blu-ray Review: Abigail (2019)

Abigail (Tinatin Dalakishvili) has grown up in a city surrounded by a thick border constructed to keep a mysterious illness at bay… an illness so severe that if you show any signs of having it the government just hauls your ass away (as they did with Abigail’s own father). The problem with this is, the disease doesn’t exist. In fact, Abigail’s city has been overtaken by dark magic users who have attempted to erase all knowledge of magic in a city once full of it, and dig this; the people hauled away are those suspected of being able to possess magic ability. This of course sets Abigail off on a journey to find her father while learning to control her own burgeoning magical abilities while becoming a hero to the downtrodden… all in a days work for our scrappy heroine! The first thing you will doubtless notice about Abigail is that this film is absolutely a visual wonder. Every detail

Movie Review: Accident is a Beautiful, if Lightweight Thriller

Two women on their way to a music festival hitch a ride with two dudes in a stolen car. Things get slightly rapey and the car goes a shootin’ down into a ravine, where our “heroes” become trapped in the overturned vehicle. Horribly wounded the gang tries to survive the night with little chance of rescue…but can they survive each other and the evil that greed can inspire? While the story line, as evidenced by my lil’ synopsis up there may be a bit lightweight (I actually would call it compact, streamlined, and uncomplicated), Accident more than makes up for it in visual panache. Director Dan Tondowski and Cinematographer Maxime Cointe have created a masterpiece (in the ‘looking good’ department that is) of long, unbroken shots and serpentine camera moves (both natural and digitally enhanced) that are rather astonishing at times, and they also manage to effectively dial it back once the protagonists become trapped within the confines of the
