Let me start off by saying “Proxy” is not your standard horror film, however, it is an extremely violent, disturbing thriller, that leads horror viewers into a new subgenera of horror films. I warn ALL viewers that this film is EXTREMELY violent, some of this violence is present in the first 5 minutes of the film, before the main title even pops up on screen.
“Proxy” centers around the life of 3 individuals who have all suffered a loss, in one way or another. There are a lot of new faces in this film, however there is one very familiar face to horror fans, Kristina Klebe, better known as Rob Zombie’s Lynda in his version of “Halloween.”
The films main star Alexia Rasmussen (Esther Woodhouse) does a great job at playing a typical loner, who when asked who her best friend is, she states, “her fish.”
The film is a little artsy, but absolutely beautiful. The film opens with a woman having a sonogram and her looking up through the ceiling at a blue sky (which reminded me very much of “Requiem for a Dream”)… throughout the film you are shown strange shots, all of which have a dark overtone, such as a dead fish floating in a fish tank.
While it might be a little boring, I beg you, if you can make it through the violence, stick with it, because this film is done brilliantly well! Right around the 40 minute mark we get an extremely awkward sex scene, that mimics a shot EXACTLY from Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining.”
Some scenes do drag on a little longer than they should and some of the makeup effects in the beginging are a little cheesy… but when there is blood, there is more than enough to satisfy every horror fans need and the message and uncertainty throughout the entire film is truly horrifying.
I look forward to seeing what director Zack Parker does in the future!
Proxy was released in 2014 and is available for purchase on Blu-Ray and Dvd and it is currently streaming on Netflix.
