Apple TV’s breakout horror-comedy led the pack at the 2026 Emmy Awards, taking home a staggering 14 trophies from 19 nominations across the Primetime ceremony and the Creative Arts Awards. Delivering a phenomenal wave of wins, the show proved that its unique blend of slow-burn dread, razor-sharp humor, and island-isolated paranoia completely captivated voters this season.
Spooky Legends and Marketing Nightmares
Created by Katie Dippold, the series takes place 40 miles off the coast of New England in a town where the local ghosts and ancient curses clearly didn’t get the rebrand memo. The narrative follows Mayor Tom Loftis, played by Matthew Rhys, a desperately ambitious man trying to save his dying community by converting it into a premier tourist hotspot. Unfortunately for Tom, the locals are fiercely superstitious, cell service is non-existent, and everyone views him as a total coward. Just as his marketing plan begins drawing crowds, the “ridiculous” local legends of a lurking evil prove to be terrifyingly accurate.

A Historic Night for Cast and Crew
The series dominated major categories, claiming the ultimate prize for Best Comedy Series. Matthew Rhys also made history as a double winner that night. He took home the trophy for Lead Comedy Actor for Widow’s Bay, along with a win for the limited series The Beast in Me. Kate O’Flynn won Supporting Actress, while veteran character actor Stephen Root took home Supporting Actor. However, behind the camera, creator Katie Dippold won the Emmy for writing, while visionary director Hiro Murai snagged the award for directing.

In our exclusive interview with the cast and showrunner, Dippold noted that while the horror elements are genuinely terrifying, the comedy stems from how awkward and ill-prepared the islanders are when facing supernatural threats. At the same time, Root and O’Flynn teased the quirky personalities of permanent residents who have lived alongside a curse for so long that they treat murderous spirits more as a minor inconvenience than a tragedy.
