There is one good thing we can say about 2016, there were a lot of fantastic genre series on television. We have narrowed it to the 10 best.

IFC’s ‘Stan Against Evil’ is hilarious! Demons, witches, ghosts, and humor, what a great combination! John C. McGinley does not disappoint. His unique brand of comedy shines in this series. McGinely, Janet Varney, and Deborah Baker Jr. make ‘Stan Against Evil’ unforgettable. We can’t wait for the second season.
9. Z Nation
A group of survivors are on a mission to get Murphy, the one man immune to the zombie virus, to California, where his blood can be used to create a cure. While the series is about a surviving a zombie apocalypse, it is filled with humor. Keith Allan stars as Murphy. Kellita Smith, Anastasia Baranova, Nat Zang, and Russell Hodgkinson co-star.
8. The Exorcist
I’ll be honest, before the show began I did not have high hopes for it. I was not sure how the series could live up to the original film. I assumed it would be a failure. I am happy to admit I was wrong. The series was great. The cast did an amazing job bringing the characters to life and capturing the spiritual darkness that they had to confront in each episode. If you have ever wondered what Regan’s life would be like after she is exorcised from her demons in the 1973 film, you have to watch this series.
Alfonso Herrera, Ben Daniels, Geena Davis, Hannah Kasulika, Brianne Howey, and Alan Ruck star.
7. Grimm
‘Grimm’ takes us on a modern day journey through a world filled with creatures inspired by Grimm’s Fairy Tales. David Giuntoli stars as Nick Burkhardt, a Portland detective thrust into the role of a Grimm. With the help of his friends, played by Russell Hornsby, Silas Weir Mitchell, Reggie Lee, Elizabeth Tulloch, Bree Turner, and his love interest Adalind (Claire Coffee), Nick must save the city from an uprising of Wesan. The final season of ‘Grimm’ premieres January 6th.
6. Salem
‘Salem’ cast a spell on me from the very first episode. The series is not only a dark tale of the witches of Salem, it is at its heart a love story. The series has created a beautiful, dark backdrop and a collection of characters that pull you into the story. Sadly, this season was its last.
Janet Montgomery, Shane West, Seth Gabel, Tamzin Merchant, Ashley Madelwe, Elise Eberle, Oliver Bell, Xander Berekley and Lucy Lawless co-star.
5. Supernatural
Over the past eleven seasons we have watched brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) fight everything from ghosts to Lucifer himself with the help of Cass (Misha Collins), an angel, and Crowley (Mark Sheppard), the king of Hell. You can’t help but love the show’s characters.
3. The Strain
‘The Strain’ is awesome! There is a ton of action, a great storyline, fantastic effects, and an amazing cast. Unfortunately, it’s upcoming fourth season will be its last. In the series Corey Stoll plays Eph, a doctor trying to find a cure for the vampire virus. He fights alongside Fet (Kevin Durand), Abraham (David Bradley), and Dutch (Ruta Gedmintas) to save the city from the infected, while he searches for his son.
We were very disappointed when we learned that this brilliant, beautiful, and dark series was ending, but its last season did not disappoint. ‘Penny Dreadful’ was simply amazing. The way the storyline incorporated the classic tales of ‘Frankenstein’, ‘Dorian Grey’, ‘The Wolf Man’, and many others was flawless. We will be keeping our fingers crossed that one day we will see the series return.
Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Roy Kinnear, Billie Piper, and Harry Treadaway lead the cast.
‘Ash vs Evil Dead’ is “groovy” beyond words. There is no resisting the charm of Bruce Campbell’s character “Ash”. Between the bad ass deadite slaying of Lucy Lawless (Ruby), Dana DeLorenzo (Kelly) and Ray Santigao (Pablo), the great special effects, and the hilarious one-liners, this show is a winner. Luckily, Starz has already renewed the show for season 3.
‘The Walking Dead’ earns our number one spot. You can’t ignore the fact that the series has hordes of dedicated fans who defend the series even when the show is having its ups and downs. It’s a fantastic series whose characters we can’t help but root for.
Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Chandler Riggs, Lauren Cohan, Danai Guira, Sonequa Martin-Green, Alanna Masterson, Josh McDermitt, Christian Sarratos, Seth Gilliam and Jeffrey Dean Morgan star.
