Even with The Dark Towers getting a lukewarm (at best) reception from critics, the series adaption is still moving forward. It has just been announced by Sony and Media Rights Capital that they have hired The Walking Dead’s former executive producer Glen Mazzara as the series’ showrunner.
Set to have between 10 and 13 episodes per season, the series will begin production in 2018. The film adaptation’s lead actor Idris Elba will star as Roland. Dennis Haybert will play the role of Roland’s father, Steven. Tom Taylor has also joined the cast to play Jake Chambers.
In an interview, co-writer and producer Akiva Goldsman announced that writing the scripts has begun.
The first episode of a show has been written, and we hope to retain Ron Howard’s original idea to mix platforms, something that seemed revolutionary 10 years ago but now is something that others have done,” Goldsman said. “Idris for sure is part of this, and if the movie is Roland Deschain the gunslinger, the show is his origin story, based on the fourth novel in the series, Wizard and Glass.”
We’ll keep you posted.
